Get him to reset the immobilizer. And reprogram the keys. If he has the latest snap-on software he will be able to do it.

If he has snap on mate. It's very easy to do. By following the instructions on screen.

But the car pass is required.

Immobiliser fault on my car (2005MY) should be a car and padlock
Nothing for just a spanner, so presumably car and spanner?
Ironic the same fault can show either

Page 55 of my handbook advises to restart sequence :
Insert key, remove key, insert key, then start engine
    If fails, use spare key

If the spare key works, then retest with the other key, you should find it then resynchronises
Equally, did the central locking working with the failed key?
Mine loses its code typically once every six months, so have to unlock the door, alarm goes off, insert key and restart sequence
If it happens twice in the same day then I replace the battery

Sounds to me like the key you are using has lost its code
A fresh battery should solve that

My previous Ford Mondeo Mk3 had a similar process, although it was not published in the handbook (found this was insert key, press clock, press key, wait)
