    Default Smoking CDTi 150

Last night i had to go to asda which is about 10 miles away in boston. Once i got to boston and was stopped in traffic the car started smoking badly. It was dark so i couldnt see the exact colour of the smoke but it smelt like burning. There were no warning lights illuminated, so i carried on to asda and wound the window down to have a listen for any funny noises. The car sounded like it had suddenly delevoped a hole in the exhaust somewhere, like a raspy blowing noise when i accelerated.
Anyways, i parked the car up und got out to see if i could see any leaks underneath. The smell was there but the smoke had all gone. Pressing the accelerator with my hand to check for leaks but nothing! I presumed that maybe the DPF had activated or something? Ive not got much knowlege of how or when the dpf works tho!
So, driving home i was checking how everything was. The smoke was gone, however for a couple of miles the car felt under powered and the instant fuel consumption was reading 30mpg at 60mph in 6th gear on a flat straight road, where usually it should be 50+mpg! A few miles later and the MPG picked up again to the normal 50+. Very strange!

The car still feels underpowered compared to when i bought it 3 weeks ago. The boost just doesnt seem to be there, also the turbo whistle seems louder than normal and there is a whooshing sound when i accelerate. The car feels a little bit rough on tickover i think, but this may just be my imagination as not used to diesel's!

Had to drive to work this morning and it behaved normally, mpg was fone and there was no smoke!

Can anyone shed any light on this for me?

I bought it from a used car dealer and have the 3 month warranty, just over 2 months left on it!

    Thanks in advance guys!

Try the intercooler/ hozes mate. When mine went the wooshing was incredible and it was spraying oil vapour onto the exhaust manifold making it smoke like a biggun'. It didn't affect the MPG though. :/ If i remember rightly, the wooshing only seemed to happen under load, not when i was say stationary at the traffic lights. Checking the Intercooler involves taking the front bumper off for real good look though. Not a difficult job but it's not nice being down on the floor when it's this cold Good luck

This sounds like it might explain whats going on with mine! Oil on the manifold would certainly explain the smell and a loose hose might explain the whooshing. It sounds loke ive got a dump valve fitted lol! Ok will try to have a proper look when i finish work this afternoon.
Will driving about with any turbo/intercooler pipes loose do any damage?

    Cheers

From what you say it does sound like a DPF regen. Check your oil level and look for any signs of a leak. I am no expert but from memory and reading through old posts over the years it does sound like dpf. Try a search for dpf regeneration.
    3.2 v6 Signum and loving it 😁

Dump valve. That's EXACTLY it. just what i had. Check on the intercooler (middle radiator) for a saggy bottom :/ it's a common fault i beleive. Also the 2 hoses either side of it (in & out). I was told busted intercooler/ pipes were fine to drive around with, however i cant help but thinking if any muck should get in through a hole, it can't do any good. best to just drive carefully (not through deep puddles & stuff) I got a new intercooler from the stealers for £180, it's the same one they put on the VXR's. There's plenty of How2 info on here about changing them. Took me about 2 hrs. That's about £100 in garage terms
