Default Does GM oil have a 'sell by' date?

Got a nice 5L of GM oil today delivered but it has a date on, is this a sell by date or a produced on date?

In theory motor oil will degrade after three years but in practice as long as it's sealed it should outlast the container it's in.

Just check that there is no seperation or bits floating in it otherwise it should be OK. If its creamy white it's sh*te.

    What date does it have?
I know Castrol have the packaging date on them and we need to dispose of them after 5 years

Equally this date can be referred to if a claim needs to be made against Castrol

Sounds about right for the production date on GM-LL oil from a dealership
The bottle I have is dated 22/10/2008, bought on 22/12/2008

It says on Mobil1's website that their oil will keep for 5 years still sealed in the original container. It will last the same time even if the container's been opened if its been kept in a dry enviroment.

I do wonder if this "sell by date" is in some form a "money spinner" for the manurfacturer.
When I was a kid there was No such thing. Yes things do perish.
I am a First Aider. Would you belive me if I said there was a "use by date" on a bandage. Heck it is made of cloth. Providing the packaging is not broken or damaged. I would have thought it would have lasted for ages. Cream,s and liquids, I would agree with.
Still I might be wrong. But they salted meat sealed it in a tin and went round the world exploring for years and years on end, with No sell/use by date and well found new continents.
Sell by date/use by date, It does leave an open question!. Well in my mind it does.
