    Default Dirty Brake Fluid?

My father in law has a 1.8 elite on a 59 plate. He has a service policy with a local VX dealer. Taken in and they have charged him an extra £80 (not covered) to change the brake fluid saying it was dirty? Also they had to clean the brakes? Car not done a lot of miles only a few thousand.

He doesn't use it often but it does move at least once a week.

Does this sound like something that would happen if car not used much .... Or a con to add extra money to the service?

    Strange!

Due to the amount it gets used i'd say it's very unlikely that it was dirty.

The point that draws me in is the fact they took £80 to change it. It's not a difficult job and fluid is only about 5 or 6 quid a litre for the fluid so where the hell did they get that price from. Imo it should be about half that

Brake fluid needs changing at least every 2 years due to being hydroscopic (absorbs moisture)

And it's good practise to strip an clean the brakes aswel

They have charged extra outside the service so if mean't to be done then should of been in the price I would of thought?

£80 for the change and a clean of the brakes, not seen a price breakdown but guess the clean would be a small part of the £80 and the fluid change the rest. VX dealer work rate charge as well!

Just seemed odd for 59 plate.

Brake fluid change is every 2 years, but they should have at least phoned him to tell him if he wanted it done and how much it was going to cost. £80 seems a bit stiff for a £35 job at most dealers. On a 59 plate car it will be a 5 minute job at each caliper.
When you say "Service Policy" does that mean that he got a set amount of free services when he bought the car? Sounds like they have been trying to get some money back, as its service work where dealers make their biggest profits.

They did call him, said yes ....... he said do it. I got asked about it when I got in, too late to do owt.

I thought it a bit steep and strange job needed doing so soon. My thoughts are 'extra' money.

Shame no way of seeing if did change fluid.

Laugh if my car needs the same thing doing when goes in next couple of months!
