    Default instrument cluster

    bought a vectra yesterday, 2002 (02) 1.8 16v sxi with 70k...

anyway, driving it home the full beam light had a faint glow, flashed lights, lit up as normal and then back to faint glow... a wee while later went back out to it, this time the right indicator had the faint glow and the full beam glow was off.

and another point, the temp gauge was at the start position for ages, crept up to 80 and then straight back down to the start, it heats up in the cabin nice and warm, thermostat problem?? or all dash problems relate to one thing??

all the other parts of the dash work fine

oh, and anyone around glasgow with vaux-com or whatever its called to switch off steering pump pic on dash, its had new pump but garage didnt have equipment to switch light off...

    cheers
    stewart

Could be a fault with the clocks, but you'd need a spare set to test them with

Yes it sounds like the thermostat...

and with the steering pump the light should go off itself when the fault is corrected, so sounds like there is still a problem with it, maybe the wrong rack fitted, theres several different types.

Sounds to me like a bad earth on lighting,

or poor track intengrity in your cluster.

    1) Check your light clusters for corrosion and usual poor earthing.

    2) Check the instrument cluster for corrosion, burnt tracks or poor / loose connection... especially the brown ground wire.

Regarding the power steering light - normally this should clear itself once it has been repaired.

For a quick fix (for many niggle-type faults) - disconnect the main battery for an hour or so, and then reconnect it.

It should clear any historic faults from being indicated on the instrument panel, as long as they have been fixed properly.

Incidentally, if your instrument "dim-glow" problem is a CANbus glitch, then disconnecting of the battery usually sorts these out.

BUT - Before you disconnect the battery, make sure you know the audio code (on the vehicle pass) and also you know how to input this correctly.

cool, there is a receipt with the car on having the pump replaced (at £390, sound right?) and he said the garage couldn't reset the pic? he also said he had a guy coming out to reset it but he couldn't make it....

i'll cheack all the clusters tomorrow, but how do i go about getting the clocks out? on my old mk2 golf it was a two minute job but this looks harder!!

i'll try disconnecting the battery (as long as i have the code, wouldn't have thought of that lol) and leave it off for tonight, will that do??

    cheers

Virtually any decent auto factors should have a thermostat for your car..

As the Vectra and Saab are the same car with a different body and badge, then yes GSF should carry these.

Over-night is plenty... just depends on what your local crime rates are.
If it is a safe area then fair enough... otherwise I would not recommend leaving it un-protected for any longer than necessary. Like I said - 1 hr is all you really need.

I personally have not used Behr, however from the threads I have read, they should be more than satisfactory.

Found this comment quoted on the BMW forum Bimmerfest.com

"Behr is an OEM supplier. Have it in my car (and put them on several customer cars) and seems to work fine. "

    on this thread

    http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=403445

    hope that helps.
