Default Car Park Dents and Insurance Claim?

My Vectra has a couple of scuffs and dents due to the usual muppets in car parks, but today took the biscuit.

Turned into a supermarket car park to be met with a runaway shopping trolley! The un-manned and pilotless projectile hit, dented and creased the front wing, scraping the paint off down to the primer.

Had a quote from Chips Away for £265 + the dent to be removed (estimated @ £75-100) so I'm thinking of an insurance claim.

The missis deals with RTAs and personal loss claims and thinks they'll pay up - but obviously the premium will go up next year. I doubt it'll go up by £450+ (although it really wouldn't surprise me), so I was wondering if anyone else has claimed for car park accidents, and what was the outcome?

As a slight aside, in public car poarks (especially shopping centres and supermarkets), I like to park away from other cars even if it means a two minute walk in the rain, but 9 times from 10, someone HAS to park right next to mine, even when there's hundreds of other spaces.
I really do wonder why. Is it simply to wind me up, or they wanna park to a good-looking car?
Next time someone does this, I think I'll wait for them to return to their car and ask why they do it!

Apart from the possible rise in premium next year, also consider what excess you have. If it's the same as mine, £250 then is it worth claiming. Also it depends on your insurance policy, you can claim your excess back but only from an at fault claim (other party) as I understand it. You need to read your fine print

Oh... I was reading up on insurance claims and also read that even if you just enquire about claiming it may go down as a possible reported accident thus a raise in your premium next time

TBH I be inclined to try to make a claim off the supermarket. They have a duty of care regardless of what their signs say about accepting no liability for loss or damage in their car park. If a customer dropped a bottle of vegetable oil in an isle and you slip and broke your arm they are liable as their duty of care is towards you. Got to be worth a try.

I would be one of the ones who parked near you, but not too close. I always park away from the herd and try to stay in the good company of other careful parkers. You can sort of tell just by looking.

I wouldn't claim, supermarkets can afford better lawyers who will uphold the 'at your own risk' clause. I dont think your road insurance is even valid on private land unless it's a personal injury.

So if there's loads of empty areas of the car park, you'd still go and park next to someone like Pedro, who clearly wants to be nowhere near other cars? Why?

I can't see the supermarket paying that much, but they may be prepared to make a contribution. Years back we were parked outside Sainsburys, a pink skip truck dropped a skip off, then dragged it across the back of Wendy's car, scratching the paint and covered it in crap.
They denied it, saying they'd lifted the skip shoulder high past the cars, but the store manager decided the marks on the road told another story, and gave Wendy a payment to get the scratch fixed - I'd agreed I could wash the rest off.
Got to be worth explaining, showing them the quotes, and asking if they'd contribute, even to help with your excess.

thanks for the input, guys. A few things I hadn't thought of, so might as well leave it for the time being.

I like the idea of replacing the wing - as said, not very difficult.
Pity the front bumper is all scuffed too - down to the primer on the OS corner.

I dunno, it seems to be a ****-magnet at the moment!
