    Default R.I.P Max the GSD

I visited my parents in the New Forest this week and while I was there I had to take Max their 14 year german shepherd to the vet to be put to sleep What a terrible experience. He was a brilliant dog and he was as sharp as ever but his legs had given out. I never want to go through that again and I hope that when its time for my 10 year old german shepherd Sadie to go that she goes peacefully in her sleep. My parents are totally distraught.

    R.I.P Max

I have been there many times with dogs that I have had, it does not get any easier. But do dwell on the good times you had with them, it takes some of the pain away.
    RIP Max.
PS One of my dogs died on my birthday. A day I will never forget.

I had to take a mate's GSD to be put down while he was away in Afghan - a week before he was due back. Her back end had gone completely.

The way I look at it - you feed the dog because it's hungry and needs feeding, you walk the dog because it needs exercise, you groom it when it needs a brush.
So, you put it to sleep when it's the right time.

Try not to see it as a sad thing - it was the right thing to do. The worst thing you can do is keep a dog alive when it's suffering. Too many people don't have the guts to make the decision when it needs to be made, they put it off because they know it will make them feel bad - that just makes the dog suffer to make a person's life easier.

You've done the right thing. I'm a massive fan of GSDs (I found a replacement for my mate a few months later) and it sounds like Max was a good one. He gave you and your parents a lifetime of loyalty - in return you made the tough decision when it needed to be made.

I know it was the kindest thing for him and it was me that said to my mum and dad about taking him, I think that they were clutching at straws thinking he would improve but I think deep down they knew that it was the right thing to do for him. But they're whole life revolved around him so they are just trying to keep busy. My GSD will searching all over for for him when we go down down at Christmas she adores him. I've told them to just focus on all the good times and not think about his last moments but its very difficult for them at the moment but it will get easier as time goes by. Thanks for all your kind words.

Yeah thanks Danny its my parents that are really suffering as I've had to return home to London and they are left with an empty house, they're doing well though really, making sure that they keep busy during the day and going out etc so hopefully taking their mind off of it a bit.

Heartbreaking thing to do, _ I've had to do it several times now, we lost one recently, though he died in his sleep. Think of it as a last kindness for a faithful friend, for that's what it is, rather than leaving them to suffer.
