Default Found out something about the EGR valve

guys i took mine out today and it wasnt that bad at all(only cleaned it a few weeks ago). There was already a hole drilled out so i could knock the solanoid out but no matter how hard i hit the punch it just would bugde so instead i sprayed carb cleaner into the small hole untill it rand clean then put some grease into it.

Right now heres what i noticed,if i put my finger over the dilled hole and push the plunger in(air tight as if the hole wasnt there) its really hard to push in and springs back with some force but if i push it in with the hole exposed its goes in and out very easily. Now on the metal half of the EGR valve theres a spring and rubber plunger that needs some pressure to push it down and i dont think with the drilled hole in the solanoid there will be enough force to push the plunger down?

    What do you guys think?

hi justin 32 , yes i also noticed this to a few mounths back whilst exsperimenting with two old egr valves . i also found aswel putting a screw or something back in the solinoid part to make it air tight again would reduce some of that turbo lag feeling you get after cleaning egr .
ps should of really posted my results may of helped somebody ..

Are you saying that drilling the hole is a good thing or bad thing?

i wouldnt class is as a bad thing but leaving the hole open would definatly hinder performance and the pin does not have enough force to push the valve in.

Also i found with mine is that the pin slides in nice and smooth and with ease if i leave the hole open but as soon as i block the hole the pin gets stuck half way in and then makes a horrible grating sensation when it pops out and i need to give it a whack to get it to fully come out...Now this would be how its working with the engine

I think im going to have to bite the bullet and get another valve at some point as after cleaning mine today the car feels underpowered and a bit sluggish.

Is it the EGR that causes the lag then?

Also why is there lag after cleaning?

    Hi Justin,
I`m taking my EGR valve out tomorrow to clean it, as it runs lumpy on first start up and sometimes lacks power between 1000-2000rpm.......do you think it is the egr valve.....?

If you didnt seperate the solenoid you wouldnt of been able to clean the egr valve properly, i didnt 100% understand what you explain in the first post.

Its acctually the solenoid part that becomes 'rough' due to the moisture in the exhaust gases, its normally very easy to seperate everything, and i've found a light coating of engine oil works better than grease.

normally after cleaning my egr valve it lasts for around 5k miles i clean it with each service ( every 6k) as my car runs a tuning box and i dont want the oil to become diluted too much.

its good thing of coarse to make sure your solinoid pin is free and moving , but after drilling out i would defo screw something back in solinoid part .

my theory is justin , drilling solinoid part out and leaving the hole open is giving less resistance for pin to push open egr valve part ,
by adding screw or something to that effect is creating a vacume seal giving more resistance for pin to push egr valve in closed position therefore better control over valve in lower rpm range .
