Default Strange clonk from front end

Had a strange clonk appear from the front end a month or so ago, took it to local garage who said they could not find any problem, anyway yesterday it come back on way home from work, when i hit a dump i get a clonk sound which sounds like its coming from the front drivers side and i can feel it through the floor. Took it out last night and it did not do it again. On the way to work this morning it started again straight away, over spped bumps, pot holes a realy heavy clonk sound, i almost turned round and went home, at one point on a smooth section of road it was doing it every couple of seconds, then it stopped again. Took it to the local garage again today and again test drive, put it on the ramp and they could not find any problems.
I did not want to drive it the 20 miles home and left it with them to test drive in the morning again.
They have checked all the joints, springs etc.
    Any ideas ?, please

The front drop links tend to make a twang noise when they have worn, usually as you steer and go over a bump at the same time

Sadly the noise and symptoms you have described sounds like either the offside shock absorber or strut mounting

The shock absorber is easy to check, run your finger under the plastic cover
If there is any dirt it has failed

My money is on the strut mounting
As above, give the car a good shove horizontally and listen for clunk
It is easier to locate with the bonnet raised

Would the shock made the noise whilst driving in a straight line on a smooth section of road
