Sooty exhaust tips - Y30DT

I've posted in this section because I believe it's related to my ongoing misfire problem .

Near side chrome tip (the outside) is lovely and shiny but the off side one is covered in soot, black all over.

All I know is that the exhaust is a single pipe under the car until it splits at the Y piece and the n/s rear box is larger than the o/s one.

Any reasons .

Only reason I can think of size difference is the space around wheel well maybe.

Are you getting anything coming out of the clean exhaust?

Perhaps back box internals have started to break up causing a blockage. Long shot like.

I tend to agree there, sounds like the nearside rear silencer has neared the end of its life
However, if the internals have failed you can check in several ways for this
The obvious one is to bang the underside and see if anything rattles inside
During the hours of darkness, stand behind the car (side on, not directly behind) whilst someone blips the throttle (same as per MoT test)
If small sparks can be seen coming out then this confirms the internals have failed (equally, you only get this on a diesel)

Has either been replaced?
Equally, last time you cleaned them, did you perform this in equal lighting conditions?
As above, have someone blip the throttle briefly (same as per MoT test) whilst you stand at the back of the car to see if the amount of smoke is equal between both rear pipes

I find the external alloy is a nightmare to clean, due to the lack of clearance between the alloy and bumper
I tend to clean it once a year using a J-cloth and T-Cut
It lasts just a few weeks
As for the inside, I've never touched it
In the past I used to jet wash the insides with the engine running, but never again, the water can settle inside the silencer and cause premature failure

Both boxes look like 46 mile originals, judging by the rusty outer skins.

I was thinking along the lines of as the n/s box is bigger, it's able to catch more of the soot whereas the o/s doesn't.

Critch - hand over the end of each tip seems to give similar back pressure.
I take it that your tips don't show this difference? I'll have a go at what m8internet has suggested - should be fun tonight .

Im sure this has been covered before, but cant remember when. Im sure it was decided it was common for one to soot up and not the other. Ill see if I can find the post, though neeedle and haystack spring to mind

Yes, they are slightly different shapes, take a look under any other Vectra C with twin rear boxes and you will note this
However in a diesel there is virtually nothing internally in the rear silencers hence why they tend to last longer than petrol equivalents
As for catching soot, only a visual examination will confirm this, nothing internally should be performing this, and then as above if there is less soot this suggests the internals have failed

How ever when idling on cold start I have noticed slightly more smoke from n/s than o/s

Cant find it :-( I know I didnt dream it, so will take another look later.
