Default the dreaded af33 gearbox issue !

    hi all,

my vectra 2.2dti has done 144,000 miles before the dreaded auto gearbox lost its drive.

is there any guides/manuals about to help with taking the gearbox apart to get to the filter to clean it out?

had 2 quotes of just under £2000 to recon the box but i cant afford that, but both have said clean the filter and new oil should revive it for a while!

not what was needed this side of christmas !

    cheers
    steve

From personal experience I wouldn't even waste your time or money mate.
You need to decide whether it's economically viable to -
    1 - put a secondhand box in .
2 - Sell the car and get what you can back for it , which will cover the cost of a runabout until you can get something better.
3 - Break it for spares and try and recoup some cash , but tbh I'm not sure whether it would be worth your while.
I feel for you mate , been there and done it.

The whole car is on its last legs and the only bits worth selling would be my 19inch snowflakes and 314mm brakes!
I understand that a lot of people have had the same problem and i feel for you all but all i want is some info on taking the box apart, because weather people say i should or shouldn't take it apart in goin to anyway because in my eyes i can't make it any worse!

I have been a mechanic for 10yrs amd worked on many manual gearboxs so i feel more than competent to take it apart .

    Cheers

I've never heard of anyone solving this problem by replacing the filter etc, you'll need to replace the whole gearbox I think. Basically your gears have been turning with just water as a lubricant, and that can't be fixed with a new filter.

From what I can remember there is no filter , just the pick up .
If you can hear a whining from the the pickup pump you "may" and I stress "may" be able to breathe a little life back into it by cleaning the gauze in the pan ( if it's whining it's obstructed) , you could expect to gain anything from 50 to 500 miles I reckon.
I changed the dexron fluid in mine and flushed it to no avail , each time I got false hope because drive was restored for a day or so and then it went again.
I myself had the hefty quotes of nearly 2k to rebuild , so I thought what the heck to it and got it on a ramp and took the box out. (2-3 hours) .
When I split the casing it was like a murder scene , the clutch plate bands had more or less disintegrated (scorched and warped) and there were actually teeth floating around that had sheared off
My mate who has been a diesel technician for 20 years came and gave his opinion and had his head in his hands , we both agreed there was no way on earth that any parts in the box were serviceable or re-useable , and if they were , we sure as hell would not like the job of rebuilding it , there is a reason auto-transmission specialist's charge so much to rebuild these boxes
I ended up breaking the car as it was a v6 I did not do too badly .
But the bit that was most painful was the extra cash and time I had spent trying to breathe life back into the piece of 5h17 !
I'm not trying to put a damper on your plans , just trying to save you some time and money from my experience .
So to sum up , if you have intermittent loss of drive and can hear a whining at the pickup you may be able to stretch a "few" more miles out of it by flushing.
If it's past this stage or the box locks up sometimes when rolled forwards in any gear it's shot dude.
    Good luck

That's how mine started , just driving along then went round a roundabout and no drive when I accelerated
( as if the clutch on a manual was slipping ) My fluid was not milky either , and the recall work on the cooler seals had been done 2 years previously .
As for parts not really got a clue , I even offered the parts from my box to a transmission specialist , and he said " thanks but no thanks " apparently the aisin warner box is useless even as salvage once it's gone bang , and are notorious on the vec-c .
Sorry but I can't offer any more advice , and I'm doubtful anyone else will be able to either ..... Good luck.
