Don't think so, if you get pulled over police can either take you to the station or issue you with a ticket giving you 10 days to go into the local cop shop with your details. Not sure, I always have mine with me so it's never an issue.

Its not a legal requirement so long as its a Uk valid license, however if you are stopped you will get given a "Producer" to produce your license to your local police station within X amount of days.. i cant remember if its 7 or 14 (its been over 7 years since i had one lol)

It is actually an offence not to carry all your docs with you whenever you drive. My wife and I were involved in a car accident a few years back and the PC cautioned my wife for not having her docs on her.

There is absolutely NO requirement in law to carry your licence when driving in the UK, but some people recommend it. The Police are entitled to ask to see your licence at any time and if you do not have it immediately, you will be ordered to produce it to a Police Station (of your choice) within 7 days. Failing to produce within that period of time is another offence, even if you do actually hold a licence.

Personally, I do not carry anything. I can prove my identity if required, and they will have access to the Police national computer anyway.

Thats weird, I was pulled over for a "spot check" about 5 years ago. I had my license, mot cert, insurance doc and obv tax disc displayed. She advised me not to keep such documents in the car due to identity fraud lol.

Saying that she still gave me a producer haha

If your involved in a accident you will get cautioned regardless, this is to gather evidence in case the insurance claim ends up in court. Im surprised your wife was cautioned for "not carrying her documents" as the copper would have clearly been in the wrong. also its not advised to carry the V5, Insurance cert. and drivers license in the car as the V5 is proof of registered keeper and if the car was stolen it could be sold on quickly before anyone had realised they were buying stolen property.

As above, there is NO legal requirement to carry any driving or vehicle documents other than the mandatory ones the vehicle requires (VED disc, CPC disc, and other licence discs as appropriate)

I have never carried my driving licences, MoT certificate, insurance certificates, etc, and never had any issues when they were requested
"Sorry I do not carry these incase they are stolen from myself or the vehicle"

I would complain to the relevant constabulary about that
Equally, what was the charge and offence?!?

Most constabularies can now check documents live without the need to issue a producer
They should only issue a producer if there is doubt or the documents are required to be viewed and verified
