Default Reading dipstick on a 1.8

Am I going mad, or is it impossible to read the oil level on VX 1.8's?

Whenever I do it, it always appears to have oil all over it and no clear indication of level - either that or mine has not used any oil in the past 5k and was overfilled before hand!

Any tips/ideas? I think its due to the bend in the tube and the stick being dragged through any oil thats in the tube?

I seem to remember that both my old 1.8 Cavalier and 1.8 Vectra B had the same problem?

i haven't had any problems reading levels. you may have to wipe and replace the dipstick more than once to get a true reading..

oh and BTW, it's not un-usual for these engines to consume no oil between changes, so just because it still say's full, it prob is..

it's actually easier to read these new 'bullet' style sticks than the older flat ones..

Thanks! Glad I'm not the only one!

I do wonder if its not using any - I've tried wiping and diping it several times but can't make out a consistent level.

The reason I'm looking is that over the past few weeks when cold its sounding a little bit rattly on start up but soon settles down after 20s or so.

I think I'll give it an oil change soon anyway (its 18months old and about to hit 10k)

i'd never leave oil in that long anyway... 6 months or 6,000 miles longest..

fresh oil should settle it down..
