Default SITREP - Alternator, EGR Valve, Low Fuel

Alternator - Failed last last month, luckily Vauxhall replaced under warranty.

Engine Management Light - Vauxhall plugged the car up, found a EGR valve's problem, they cleared it and said would replace the EGR valves if the light came back on again.

But the thing that worries me the most is:

Cut out on possibly low fuel - On the way to Braintree the other day, this is what happened
    1. Low on fuel, fuel light on but not flashing. Computer says only 20 miles left. (Motorway)

    2. Pulled into petrol pump within 2 miles of computer saying 20 miles. Fuel level needle just below middle of reserve area.

    3. Car cuts out 10 yards from petrol pump, Car wouldn't start straight away, but started on third attempt after a 20 second wait.

    4. Drove fine all the way to destination. This has never happened before, even with the fuel light flashing. (Low fuel flashing before in town traffic)

Has anyone ever had this problem before?

Could it really be a over enthusiastic fuel level, or because of speed or miles, some sort of gunk got reached the fuel pipes.

    I miss my Astra.

    Thanks

Dont take the reserve fuel indicator to be accurate, no 2 cars are the same.. One of mine tells porky pies when range=0 and needle = alarmingly close to the bottom. Other car I wouldnt take it below the red at all, when i first got it it said 10miles left... wrong.... cut out on me..

As for refill you need at least 10litres or so back in the tank and then it has to build up pressure in the fuel rail again, just ask Happypostie

    What car is it?
Some guys on vvoc say this is probably due to the fuel filter, but that was on the vec b petrols.

plasma - Thanks for your reply, hopefully i can put my mind at ease now. but still really not sure why "20 Miles Left" on motorway and it cut out, And one day in town it said "10 or 12 Miles left" but didn't cut out.
Im just hoping it gave that reading because i was on the motorway.
Filled the tank with 22 litres, and all is well.
i've sworn never to take her to reserves again. Thanks

DHobbs - its a Vectra 1.9 CDTi SRi. I've heard about the fuel filter issue with the Vectra B'S. Hope it doesn't effect the C's

I filled up today and my range never went up,this has happed to me a few times in the past so ive had to drive a few hundred miles with the range saying 0.I never use the range to judge how much fuel ive got left as i know its very inacurate.

From what i can make out about the range is that it works out the milage left(range) buy using your average MPG reading on the BC.If youve done nothing but motorway driving and your MPG is saying 55+ and then you go into town the range will either plummet like a stone or just carry on displaying the amount of fuel left in the tank calulated by the MPG and then you run the risk of running out of fuel

I think thats why when you fill up with a low MPG average and then hit the motorway the range goes up as your average MPG goes up.

I may be wrong but it seems to be the situation on my car

Ive just noticed that youve had your alternator changed recently, have you had any issues with your BC playing up that you never had before?

My alternator went and was replaced about a month or so ago and ever since then the fuel gauge and BC havent been the same i.e. not calculating properly and the fuel light comming on way to early(nowhere near the red) and taking a few miles for the light to go out after filling up.

justin32 - Im guessing thats the reason it cut out, well i'm not going to risk it again.

Since i've had the alternator changed, these are the changes I have realised. Im not saying they haven't happened before, but i've just realised it

    1. MPG not calculating properly, from 999.9 miles plummeting to 96 miles and then to the normal 40 - 60 miles and the cycle starts again. But i'm guessing this is normal.

    2. When sat-nav and system is off (a few of the lights on switches do go off aswel), leaving the Fuel Consumption screen on, i suddenly get all the lights come on for a split second and then switching back off. It can keep on doing that a few times in a journey, especially at the beginning of a journey.

However, I have not realised any change on the fuel light timing. does come on at normal low fuel and goes out straight after fill up.

    Thanks for your reply

I have had quite a few problems since my alternator change, the most annoying and worrying is my MPG,im getting half the amount i used to get before the alternator change and i cant think why.

I have realised a drop in mpg rate, but no way near half of the amount i used to get. I was presuming that it was because of the Engine management light staying on and possibly a EGR valve or swirl valve problem. But i'l have to wait and see.

It's hard to understand why a alternator change can affect mpg. Well i hope that isn't possible in your case. Hope it get's fixed soon.
