    Default The Manual vs reality

Mentioned it in passing in another thread but its bugging me enough to start a whole new thread so there!

Book says I have a 61 litre tank
Computer says I'm running on fumes (12 miles left) after using 11 gallons (50 litres)
I fill up, brim it, and I've only put in 54 litres max.

So where has the other 7-11 litres gone?! I should have another 60-80 miles atleast shouldn't I? I'm going to ask my local dealer, but having joined here, I feel confident someone has the answer..??

You have a valid question my friend, one that's been asked several times before.

I think the conclusion is, is that the Computer isn't particularly accurate.

I always fill to the brim. Normally around 44 litres worth of petrol. I fill up when the display shows the petrol pump symbol in the centre display. This tends to be after about 220 miles and the trip computer states I've used 9.5 gallons - that should indicate that there's another 3.5 gallons left, or 80 miles equivalent (at 23mpg).

It would be interesting what the fuel used value is for everyone else when the low fuel in the centre screen comes on, and what their range and mpg is!

The 'range' warning comes on my trip computer at what it thinks is 30 miles left. The petrol light on the dash has only come on once so far - when the trip comp was down to 5 miles!

Can't remember exactly how much I filled up with, but I'm sure it was only about 50 ltrs.

You`ll lose 5 -6 L in the fuels lines etc and then theres the **** in the bottom of the tank 2 - 3 L
Thats what I`ve always been led to believe.
The figure quoted as fuel tank capacity isn`t useable capacity.

i took a 1.9cdti our other day and the trip said 0 miles and the salseman said there is plenty left. get another 80 miles from what he says. these guys always leave no fuel in the car incase a punter buys it so it might be the computer is giving lots of forewarning.

i remember on topgear jezza drove a v8 diesel audi and he drove that thing with the needle on the stopper and trip saying 0 miles for a good 40 miles if memory serves.

    cheers

    True. I was amazed.

.....and he had a whole camera crew following him plus it wasn't his car that was going to get all sorts of detritus / air / whatever in the fuel lines and cost a fortune to fix.

Don't beleive the computer I ran mine out this week with 7 miles left on display
No warning it just stalled and brought warning light on(spanner symbol)
fortunately right near petrol station, they take 8-10 secs on starter to self bleed lines and restart

The most I have put in tank is 59.6litres

    Hi
Seems like most VX owners have the same prob.My V6 Vectra seems exactly like yours.Seems the fuel used computer reading is pretty accurate compared to the range left reading.
