car prices?

I am shortly going to be in the postion to get myself a care again, and really want a vectra but for some reason cars am looking at all 02/03 petrols with about average miles maybe 10k less at most, and book prices private top out at about 1200 and thats adding money for lower miles, and dealers at about 1500 everybody seems to think that they are worth 1800-1900, i a way am glad might mean they stick around not sold for longer which makes it easier for me to haggle, but were are folk getting these prices from?

its the same at couple other cars i looked at, everybody got at least 300-500 on top of book prices for cars that are nearly 10 years old, and overall they are common cars etc, i am looking forward to buying though, since i going to get the cash together that i can afford, probs be around about xmas time when i have it and just go in with low offers hope i can bag myself a bargin.

This more a rant and a ramble, but out of interest but a a 52 plate say about 75-80k miles, 1.8ls from a normal 2nd hand dealer no extras from them etc what would you pay?

only problem is i am up in aberdeen, so if i ended up traveling it be buying unseen and am not 100% on doing that

You could pay up to about £1800-£2000 from a dealer, but for the same car for a private seller id be looking more around the £1200-£1500 mark.

Private sales, people do add on 300-500 pound as most expect to be haggled down. If they wont be haggled down, in my eyes its a decent car and wud rather pay 300 over book price as the owner obviously isnt desparate to get rid of it and knows his pristine example is worth more than the book price, which has just give any dog of a car a price judging on age, model and average milage. Book prices give a rough idea, not taking into account perfect bodywork and unmarked interior and impeccable service history..ect... u get what ya pay for most times in the car world like everything else.

very ture, just now am begining to think that be a better idea to buy cheapo car with mot on it and save up some dosh till next summer and get a better car then, than try and aim at very bottom of prices for a good veccy
