I get about 500 miles on a tank full of diesel (£50) - is that about right?
What could I do to improve the MPG?

Mine does about 700 miles to a tank routinely. I've had the maximum range showing 1053 miles once after filling up, after slipstreaming a lorry down the M5 with a near empty tank for 20 miles, trying to reach the services...
Circ 78 miles to 10 gal tank (2002 Croft trackday MK2 Escort Cosworth) God I loved that car
2.2Dti about 550 with mixed road driving.
This is a really old thread isn't it?
Oh well, might as well liven it up a bit then.
I got 64.2mpg indicated today going from Somerset to Watford (A303-M3-M25) and that was without the box in so it's was probablly out by about 6%; about 60.3mpg for mixed motorway, dual carriage way and single carriage way driving. If I didn't have to speed up and slow down for the lorries so much it would have been more.
I love my car
My GSi is currently showing an average fuel consumption of 27.9mpg. My "range" display has shown over 500 miles on occasion during a motorway run at or near 70mph. (I try never to speed.) The best actual range I've had from a full tank was about 409 miles or so, almost entirely on motorways.
Is the performance worth the cost in fuel? YES IT IS!! I have NEVER driven anything like it before. It pulls from 700rpm right through to the redline, no glitches, no roughness. Just silky smoothness all the way. And once past 3500rpm, you had really better hold on tight!
All things considered, 28mpg average isn't too bad. I went through last week, commuting about 12 miles to and from work on mixed roads, on around a quarter of a tank, maybe a sniff more. So fuel consumption isn't stupid, really.
I LOVE this car!

Did I mention the lovely noise too?

i got 35.4 to the gallon (according to car computer) today, mway plus town..but to get anything like that you have to use the cruise control a lot, even around town.
if you really want to get brown trousers, try driving the 300zxtt. it only does 17mpg standard so by the time ive got my greddy fuel management/boost controllers on it comes down (even sensible driving) to about 13-14mpg. if i put a £20 worth of optimax in (remember you have to buy the expensive stuff PLUS put in an octane boost at every refill) i can get about 60 miles just cruising. thats why she dont come out till spring!
