    Default £170 .. ..

.. .. to have the alternator on the wife's Vec B replaced!!!

How much I thought? But this is for a brand new one fitted.

After a little research the price of the alternator is a little over £100 so the rest is labour. So it's not that bad I suppose. I did think of doing it myself and getting a recon'd or second hand alternator but to be honest this is the wife's and kiddies daily drive so I want it done properly.

Recent cash spent on the Vec B -

    1. MOT - £44.15
    2. 2 new tyres - £84.00
    3. MOT retest and a few minor things - £52.00
    4. New Alternator - £170.00

It all adds up doesn't it!!!

Not cheap to run 2 cars mate especially if one is ageing

You would nearly be cheaper buying Micky's

That was part of my discussion with the 'boss'.

The 'B' has now 126k miles but has had an engine rebuild and a recon gearbox and now a brand new alternator. Service and timing belt next month.

That's pretty much what I said to her Brocks, but she hates having car finance and we'd need to finance the purchase of Micky's.

We've got an offset mortgae. Used some cash out of that to buy mine. APR is the mortgage rate which is WAY cheaper than loans and finance. So instead of paying 10k over 3 years I'm paying it back at my own rate. The rise in morgage payments is almost invisible.

But what's the total paid on adding 10k to your mortgage compared to having a loan or finance over 3-4 years. You'll probably pay more in the long run if you add it to your mortgage.

    I may be wrong?

Only if I let it run the full 25 years...We're already ahead in our payments even after borrowing back 10k. Having to pay less in interest means we can attack the capital quicker. The money is as good as paid back already.

Just got a phonecall from the garage fitting this new Alternator. The car could of had one of three alternators (70amp, 80amp or 100amp). Apparently it has the 100amp, so this is feeding my suspicion that this car is an ex police vehicle.

What do you guys think? Is 100amp alternator too big for a 2.0 16V as I thought they used the 100amp on the Turbo Diesels?

When ours failed on the little Cinqucento we had. Whilst getting the price from the local motor factors for new ones (Halfords of all places) gave me the name of a local guy who re-furbed them. He had a look and it only needed new bearings so a 10 mile round trip and £20 + a six pack of Stella and it was back up and running.

Might be worth asking around to see you have anyone local who does a similar thing.

    Andy
