They last as long as you have the love for the car and the money in your wallet to maintain what is a very durable and reliable car I intend to get 10 years out of mine and I'm on year 4 of that estimated time

My 1.8 went to the big scrapyard in the sky last year, after it destroyed it's gearbox for the 2nd time. Put off by my Vauxhall chocolate gearbox experiences I bought a 2.0 Mondeo mk4, which I can say with some authority is made of 99% chocolate, and not the nice stuff either, more like that crappy stuff that easter egg shells are made of......... I can't believe how badly and cheaply built this thing is! I've got a broken lumbar support than juts out into the rear passenger knees (i'm not even a big guy), I'm afraid to adjust the headrests because if I apply any more force it'll certainly break the headrest itself, door cards sound like and feel like a cardboard box if you elbow them, AC condenser has a hole, and i've seen kitcars with less zipties in the engine bay. It also has buggy software/firmware, causing stupid little annoying "quirks".

I miss the Vectra, it was a good car, lasted me 9 years, but only an idiot would spend £900 on a gearbox for a Vectra LS worth less than £500

I looked at Insignias, but the stupid electronic handbrake put me right off.

I have no idea what i'll buy next, I don't think anything modern will ever live up to the Vectra. The Mondeo won't last more than a couple of years, so I need to start making a list of motors.

Like someone above I still have an veccy B 2l diesel ( Y Reg) with 222k still on its original clutch. It nearly got scrapped when the steering rack failed but decide to repair and on it goes. Beginning to show its age rust wise though but still runs well. And it’s only ever had the annual service with usually about 16k between oil changes.

only work apart from routine service and tyres is brake lines for an MOT fail a few years ago and new brake discs all round. Still on original exhaust - don't know why that always surprises me but it does

right I think the veccy c is a really well made car... way better than it's predecessor and will last at least as long as my mk4 golf gt tdi ... and that ate 2 clutches but did 460k + miles... i still got it and it always starts... the veccy is built way better than the golf so i expect it to last longer than that... the only regret i have is the fact that i didn't know about how difficult engine swaps on the veccy c platform actually is otherwise mine would've gotten a bigger stronger engine already. ps it's just past 140k miles and engine is just a y20dth so a bit under powered

It was around 140k, it was about due another cambelt/etc change. The first gearbox went at about 80k, the replacement did the further 60k, before 2nd gear exploded whilst trying to cross a dual-carriageway in a swift manner.
It's not just the gearbox tbh, it needed work on the rear suspension, new lower wishbones and control arms, with tyres only lasting around 8k miles.

Vectra was a solid car though, it looked solid, it felt solid and it was built properly.

Mondeo at first glance it looks great, it sells itself well, but then little things start to become obvious, like no channels at the side of the windscreen so you can't clean the screen with the windows down (unlike the Vectra), like it has a cockpit lit up like the starship enterprise but no ****** oil level warning, like everything being held together with plastic clips that break off if you try to dismantle anything.

I love trawling things when I join a forum! I've got a 1.9CDTI SRI estate which is telling me it needs a service, a duff roof ribbon and a drop linky noise. But it feels solid is quick enough for Staffordshire roads and it fits my 6foot + lads in easily (old man mode!!). It replaced a 10 plate Mondeo. That looked lovely, went averagely and needed a new cambelt at a mahoosive price. And there was an article in Practical Classics a few months ago about an engine firm who made their main money from fixing Ford diesel engines. The Vectra isn't an Audi, which i had before, but it seems to run it close so far. And it's done 133, 00 with what appears to be routine service items, according to its service history and bills.
