    Default Steering rack AGAIN !

When under the car afew days ago, noticed that the steering rack was wet around both gaiters with power steering fluid. Been to the dealers today to price up a pre tensioner kit and asked for a price on the rack aswell (wasn't going to buy one from them, just curious). The guy on the parts counter said if its wet around the gaiters, it just needs new tie rods and these are sold seperatly at £25 each with the VAT and service club discount.
Has anyone had the same with the tie rods and are they easy to do ?

Ed, is that a tool which goes over the whole length of the steering rod right to the inner joint?

A sort of circular looking thing, not unlike some "pipe cutters" I have seen. You put the tool over the tie rod there is a knurled wheel that when you turn the tool it digs in and allows you to hold it still.

dean can see that working as the ball at the end of the inner tie rod is usually larger than the nut you have to undo

and ed you can twist the tie rod as much as you like but when the ball joint is worn the ball will just turn in its housingand wont undo it

best way is a correct size spanner on the nut at the end of the steering rack , i believe its 36mm

i can see it fits quite large sizes and a good range of sizes ed so probably goes straight over the nut on the tie rod

It's wet rather than greasy Mark.
