Me well I do just that, short journeys but with some long motorway cruises at regular intervals, say every 3 weeks or so. They need to get hot on a long cruise to clear the soot build up etc. I've not had any problems so far and I don't know how long they last (DPF) but I won't worry over it.
Incidently did you see the "Watchdog" programme around 2/3 weeks ago. It featured this very subject, but about smaller diesels being used as just town cars. They were throwing up all sorts of faults to do with the cars sooting up (DPF I guess) The owners complaining, why market them as a ideal town car and this happens. Experts told them they need to be given a good thrashing (the car, not the owner) now and then to clear the build up that happens with just pootling around town.
Sure someone will correct me if I'm talking a load of sh+te.
