you need to apply for your provisional cat 'C' aka class 2. You need to pass this which includes a therory test, before you can apply for your C+E, aka class 1, which i cant urge you enough to do, with only a class 2 your narrowing down your potential prospects, not to mention class 1 work is normaly a lot easier and better payed.

in the middle of mine as well had to put it on hold as i failed my driving part of the test spent 2k up to now i left a 2 second gap on the motorway but was in the rain and should of been a 4 second gap a moment of lapse of concentration and i failed
i had to do 2 therory tests one a multi question one and one hazard one you have to pay seperate for them and i took one then had to wait 20 mins to take the other
one bit of advise i would like to say is stay clear of these companys you see on the internet saying they will do all the course and will give you a price all they are is companys in london that do it and will subcontract the work out to a local firm to you.
i had a qoute from one of these firms and for the same price i got qouted i got a extra 5 hours in the truck one to one training not shared
and a hiab training as well
go direct to a local firm

Eddie Stobart has a training academy in Cheshireand they also offer apprenticeships.

Just had a quick look and the closing date for applications is 2nd December.

    Worth a look I suppose?

mm, in a way, just fot the licence though. Asda USED to do this but made you stay with the firm for at least 18 months or you'd have to pay the remainder if you left. Stobard men are on terrible money, so unless your deperate to get on the road, swerve them imo. The other big problem you will have is getting someone to employ you, as you'll lack crutial experence, but dont give up looking for work, i didnt and i got in a firm at 22yrs old.

As above, go for the full Class 1 as soon as you have passed the Class 2
It will open so many more doors
Equally, if the company hits hard times they will more likely retain you and dump the Class 2 drivers (even if they have longer service)

Personally, with the way the economy is at the moment (so I am led to believe) I would look at a company sponsored scheme
If you pay for it yourself and are unable to get a job at the end of it you could have used the money for other (more important) stuff

Sadly we don't offer such a scheme, we only employ drivers with the required licence at the outset, a little cheap I know
I suspect this is going to have to change but asking an employee who has left early to stump up nearly £2000 on their last payslip is almost impossible to enforce
