And yet people still want the speed limit raised to 80mph!

    Yep its a good idea.

26 cars piling into each other (at a speed high enough to cause explosions) must be severe weather conditions or fog.

Anyone speeding in those conditions are just plain mad.

Or unless a lorry crashed across the central reservation and ploughed into oncoming traffic. Those are the only scenario's I can think of to cause 26 cars to crash

I See thats as the problem Steve. I drive the M8 everyday, and everyday I see idiots driving in excess of the speed limit, no matter what the weather or road conditions are. I completely agree with the argument that cars are far safer than they were 60 years old, but I think this is part of the issue, people forget they are not indestructible. Some of the driving I see is at best dangerous and at worst suicidal. I remember back in the 80's/90's

Speed is safe enough IF the weather conditions permit it, and proper braking distances kept up. I'd agree a lot of the driving seen is suicidal, largely for two reasons. Nor reading the road ahead, and driving too close.
No idea what caused this, a sad waste of life and health whatever the reason.
