    Default Water Loss CDTi 150

    Any Advice Please -
Driving up the motorway today and the coolant level light came on my 07 CDTi 150, the temperature was normal and no white smoke out the back and so I carried on until I could pull over at the next services.
The water was barely showing in the expansion tank and so I filled it up with water (about 1.5 litres) I started the engine and could see no leaks so continued on my way.
I stopped again at the next services to add another ½ litre of water as the light had come on again and then went on my way expecting to need the AA.
I stopped and checked several more times and did not need to add any more water. I then drove a 120 mile return journey (temp varied from 75 to 85) without having to add any more water. When I got home I could see with my torch brown water staining around the water pump area but no obvious leak. Has anyone else experienced anything similar?
I will have a better look in the morning when it is light but suspect a leak from either the pump or one of the pipes.

This has just happened to me this morning!!

Light came on a few days ago so topped up the tank, thought it may be low from changing hoses and losing a little, just drove to work and the light cam on again, header tank is empty!!

Only thing I've done different is let it run for 10 mins with full blowers on as really cold and icy, only short 7 mile drive and the engine bay looks dry...

Seriously getting bored of the problems that have cropped up this month, MOT is due on 27th!

Anyone any idea's, better not be pump as its only been done a year!

From my original thread back in 2011, the fault was the water pump seal was leaking. I had the pump and cam belt replaced at the same time and no problems since. The only thing I regretted was not changing the thermostat at the same time as not long after I needed to replace this too.

I would be rechecking the hoses as you say they have been changed?

Sounds like cos of "brown" water u need to clean engine out. Sometkmes the dirt blocks something and make it not work properly. Drain and flush then draun with clean water 2 times to clean it. Direct hose flush the heater matrix clean. Then reconnect and fill up when u on dry area

As u fill up try no spilling so u can look for any leakage. Check footwell as well for damp.

After that. Start engine and leave idle with hot on full. Fan on 1.

Leave expansion open. At front of engine under cover is black plastic bolt that is to release any air lock... when water coming out. Shut it. fhis need to bs done cold... hot will make plastic soft and fend to break.

If no leaks showing. Then there is no leakage.. if still losing water then there is a chance it leaking into the engine.
