    Default Change alternator on Z22YH

    Car is a 2004 elite estate with Z22YH engine.

    Going to replace my alternator and have some questions please with regard to the instructions in my Haynes manual.

    1) It states that I should drain the cooling system. Presumably I only need remove sufficient to take the level below the top hose – a pint?
    2) It states to remove the wheel arch inner cover. Is this straightforward or should I expect to encounter rust crumbling bolt heads and is it obvious which bolts need to be removed.
    3) Any further advice.

    Draining the coolant is only needed so that you can move the hose out of the way, if you can find a better way than draining all the coolant out, so much the better.

    Taking the wheel arch liner off is easy once you figure out the plastic rivets - push the middle pin inwards and it'll fall onto the ground, then you can pull the rivet out. the middle pin stops the rivet coming out. Find all the pins off the floor so you can reuse them. I don't think taking the liner off helps you do the job much though.

    Thanks.

    I note elsewhere a suggestion to consider replacing the belt and tensioner whilst replacing the alternator. Note car has done 68,000 miles.

    There's a How2 for the belt/tensioner for the 2.0T engine, which is very similar or same setup as the 2.2

    Thanks. I had seen the How2 but was unaware that the set up was the same as mine.
    One thing I failed to mention was that my car is an automatic. Will there be sufficient space for me to extract the alternator without removing additional coolant pipes?
