    Default 2.2 Performance Question

    Hey guys,

Ok, as some of you may already know. I have a 2003 SRI 2.2 (Petrol)

When I bought the car, it was already fitted with a K&N Filter so I get the lovely loud noise when in high revs etc.

The car is also lowered too which was like that when I got the car.

Now my question is, what should performance be like on this car? Like should it be very powerful on starting off for a quick get away?

Does the K&N Filter reduce performance... should I keep it or should I get standard air filter back in it?

    Thanks

Powerful when starting off compared to a micra? yes... A vxr8? no...

I have a 2.2 direct and its fast enough for me. Not super quick but quick enough not to feel bogged down. I dont know if anyone can really answer what performance should be like as everyone has different ideas / experiences of power.

The K&N shouldn't reduce performance at all, if anything it should increase it!

    Hi

A K&N will not decrease performance but without any other modifications such as a free flowing exhaust, polished & Ported head, and mods to fueling for example will not add any performance that you will notice on the road

    I have a 2002 C 2.2

From 0-40 I would forget it, they aren't fast off the mark cars. Above 40-50 mph these engines come alive and you can make good progress. Although people say they are under powered they do produce almost 150 bhp and the same torque. If the K&N is an induction kit I would remove it as you will suffer from heatsoak and this shall cause the performance to feel slightly blunt.

I dont think it's particularly quick. 3 years ago I had a 2004 2.2i direct and it was moderately nippy, good on overtaking but not fast off the line. CDTI 150 will whiz past in any gear and off the line.

The 2.2 non-direct is 143bhp. It's basically a long stroke version of the 2.0T engine without the turbo obviously to give it a little more capacity. Because of the long stroke of the engine it's a little sluggish at low revs but once the revs are up it's actually surprisingly perky.

There's not masses of things you can do to improve the performance on the 2.2 without spending loads of money. If the K&N is a panel filter then great, leave it, but as mentioned if it's an induction kit (cone filter) then get rid as it will actually lose you power. Decent exhaust system and a K&N will get you a little extra power.

Beyond that you can do a balance shaft deletion which will cost you about £150 ish and gain you about 10bhp (approximately) or go the whole hog and supercharge it which can see silly power gains. There are people running 400bhp+ out of that engine, but they've spent thousands to do it.

Best bet for info on that engine is http://www.z22se.co.uk a forum specifically about that engine (Z22SE).

I thought it was 145 bhp (147 PS)

And the direct injection 2.2 being 152 bhp (155 PS)

Cheers for your comments guys... make me feel better knowing that off the mark can be sluggish from the start.

I was driving home from Bristol on Sunday a lovely 3 hour journey. Car was spot on, as soon as I got onto the M6 had the usual c*ck getting right up my arse as 80mph wasn't fast enough for him... he was soon eating my dust. Was very impressed with how it pulls on the motorway.

I do have a K&N Cone filter in it... i'll try and take a pic of my engine in a bit so you guys can see what it all looks like.

Ian-Highlander, you mentioned K&N Panel filter? Can someone tell me what this is?

    Thanks

    Lewis
