Sounds nothing like our 2.2. Ours whistles when spooling up, this one whines? I'd get it checked asap mate. Turbo failure can result in engine damage.
I hope it's just going to be a blown hose though...are you sure you checked all of them?

I took of the intake pipe and airbox to check for splits and to expose the turbo blades. I I could move the axis up, down, left and right the tiniest amount. Hardly noticeable. Tried movingly the axis back and forth and there was zero movement so that's a good sign. I then cracked the oil feed pipe and fresh oil was present so that's okay.

I was thinking that maybe the wastegate is letting air escape but I don't know how to check and I don't even know what it looks like. Am I right in thinking there is a diaphragm in the wastegate and this can perish?

Undo 4 more bolts and this is the clean air side of the turbo.
The oil has probably come past the seals.

My turbo re-built. The waste gate is the round metal thing. It should be pulled against the main body by the vacuum solenoid. There is no gaskets except the one that joins it to the exhaust.
The exhaust moves out of the way due to the flexible pipe in the exhaust.
Make sure you have a size 11 torq socket as well as a size 10.

Did you have to to take the turbo off or just keep in situ and take off the sides? Is that a new turbo or did you give it a ****** good clean? Would it beas easy to change the turbo if it came to it? In the Haynes Mannual it says you need to remove the echaust manifold. Is that true as Haynes are known for removing things that aren't entirely necessary!

Both ends of the turbo come off with it still in situ.
You can remove the turbo without removing the exhaust manifold IF you can get the 3 T11 bolts out that hold the turbo to the exhaust manifold.
My turbo was rebuilt, cost £200.
There is also a bracket behind the turbo supporting it.
The only gasket you NEED is the one thats on the oil feed reurn pipe.

Other Garrett GT15V turbo's fit, (Astra's?) except the inlet and exhaust bits will be different but the important bit in the middle should be the same.
But if you buy one, say from ebay, there is a good chance that it will need a rebuilt.
I have bought a GT15 from an Astra, and the middle bit is the same, but it needs a rebuilt.
    Good Luck.

I think what i'll do next is take off the exahust side of the turbo and clean off all the carbon build up on the wastegate as i've got a feeling some muck may be stopping it from shutting flush. I've got a feeling this might be to do with the other problem i've been getting when the cars in 5th gear going up a hill and when I put the foot to the floor and labour the car goes itno limp home mode. Im thinking the boose is leaking out of the wastegate as the boost sensor reports a negative deviation.

I'll also double check the vacuum solenoid is working properly and the arm is moving freely.

Will I need the return oil gasket if im just taking of the exhaust side?
