Default 2.2DTI all of a sudden loud turbo whine

Its a 2.2DTI 2002 Vectra SRI Hatchback with 92k miles.

I've had the veccy nearly two years and have gotten to know it quite well now. Last week I put my foot down and was greeted with the turbo spooling up with a loud whine. It does it in all gears. There is no loss in performance and there is no smoke.

Under acceleration whine spools up with the turbo then flattens off about 3,200 rpm whilst the car still carrys on accelerating as normal

Its not a whistle which indicates a split hose. Have checked all the hoses just in case though.

I had a turbo go on my megane and it was a scrapping noise not a whine so not really sure whats going on.

has anyone had their turbo whine go loud for no reason?

Things that have been done in the last 2 months:
Oil catch tank fitted (now put back to standard in case it was causing issue)
    Full service including engine flush
    New oil and fuel filter
    Gear box oil changed

    Any ideas would be great!!!!

I have recently removed my turbo.
I cant remember if you have also removed, or played with, your turbo in the past.
It is quite easy to remove the clean air end of the turbo and have a look. Remove the pipe from the MAF, then 4 bolts.
Cracking the oil feed on top of the turbo should result in oil seeping out, and that would indicate oil feed ok.
It is also possible that the engine flush cleared crap from the turbo so its working better now!

    Edit.
Another thought. Is the removable sound panel still under the engine or have you lost it??

I was wondering if the oil vapour from the breather pipe lubricated the turbo and since fitting an oil catch tank that the turbo is not being lubricated. As mentioned I've but the breather pipe back to normal just in case. If not convinced by that though.

I'll try and record it as I'm sure it's not supposed to sound like it.

The panel Is still in place. I got a friends son who's a lorry mechanic to listen to it and he said it sounds normal to him but he did admit lorry diesel turbo and engines make a he'll of a noise when they spool. He said as there's no smoke or lack of power see how it goes but I have the feeling I'm sitting on a time bomb

The turbo has an oil feed (and drain back into the sump) its a pipe on the top of the turbo between the exhaust end and the fresh air end.
Remove the heat/sound cover and you will see it.
I do have photo's of my turbo, but they are at home.
I am intending to do a How 2 about looking inside the turbo.
When I get a round to it.

I'd recommend you to inspect the shaft of the turbo. As already said, remove the air feed hose and then with your finger gently check if there is any play. There will be some left-right, but there should be none in-out!

Will check the shaft on the weekend. I've recorded the sound whilst driving so going to upload that shortly. I'm sure you'll agree it shouldnt sound like it!

If you only recently noticed the noise it most definitely doesn't sound as it should
