    Default Bright Headlights

    If the new legislation is to take place about HID's what can you use to increase the bulb brightness?

    Osram 'Nightbreakers' or Philips 'Xtreme'. I used both in the Vec and have the Osrams in my current car. Both are good, take your pick depending on price from various online suppliers, e.g:

    Powerbulbs

    Any reference to xenon filled conventional bulbs does not mean HID's, xenon gas is also used in the high intensity filament bulbs.

    If the can system (if you have can) can take it, you could relay the headlights?

    AFAIAA, the use of bulbs with a power rating greater than 55W in dipped headlights is already as illegal as HID's will be. Not only that but current plastic reflectors and lenses will be degraded over time by the extra heat.

    The range of extra bright bulbs such as Nightbreakers are really no more than smaller filaments being over-run slightly so the life is slightly shorter than a standard filament bulb. However, the overall power drawn is still at 55W.

    Ultimately the plastic headlight construction in the Vectra is the limiting factor. HIDs are more efficient than tungsten filament bulbs, which means more of the power comes out as light and less as heat. Nightbreakers and similar as said above are better at putting out more light, at the expense of not lasting as long.

    But the single biggest problem with pre-facelift Vectras is the terrible low aim and odd beam shape of the dipped beam projector headlights. Main beam isn't too bad as standard.

    My wife won't drive my Vectra at night, as she considers the lighting to be dangerously inadequate. But then, her vehicle is a 20 year old Mitsubishi Pajero with two 9" 150W driving lights in addition to the standard 9" headlights which are running 100W main beam bulbs. Dipped beam is still just 55W in the two headlights, but those old fashioned big round headlights are so much better at getting the light where you need it...

    Wasn't talking about using higher powered bulbs really, usually you get some current loss as the standard system tends to take alot out of it.
    Relaying them may just make the bulbs you have now a little brighter giving more efficient lighting?
    Just a thought as it works a treat on other vehicles and the Vectra's arent exactly great as i've read of quite a few having dimming headlights when PAS is used.
