    Default starting issues 1.9CDTi 8v

i bought a 04 cdti 2 months ago and 2 weeks after i got it i started having starting issues. basicly it cranks over but doesn't catch the fuel. after a short while it starts. took it back to the garage numerous times and they couldn't find anything wrong. This only generally happens when the cars cold or not been used for a while.

The garage have come back to me and said it's either the crank sensor or the flywheel but the flywheel wouldn't be covered by any warranty anyway. im stuck between a rock and a hard place cos i don't know what to do now. what the garage owner has said is if i get the part then he'll get it fitted but i don't want to start paying out for something if its not right

My previous car (1.9CDTI 120) showed the same intermittent symptoms a couple of years ago so I bought a code reader from ebay (£20) and, when the problem next occurred, plugged in the reader and determined that the crank sensor was open-circuit.

Replacing the crank sensor is definitely the cheapest option - I recall paying around £80 fitted including the part, it takes less than an hour to fit.

Do you get the spanner light showing at all? If so does it show only after cranking for a few seconds? If this is the case then the glowplugs and/or the relay wouldn't necessarily be first on my list of things to check.

If one or more glowplugs were faulty then you'd likely get the 'spanner light' showing on the dash a few seconds after turning the key to the normal running (i.e. not the starting) position whilst waiting for the glowplugs to heat before cranking.

Personally I would advise investing about £20 in a fault code reader that you can hook up to a laptop rather than just guessing at the problem. A garage would normally charge you £30 - £50 for a diagnostic readout so you'll save money the first time you use your own reader. It's worth it even just for peace of mind so that you have an idea of what's wrong with the car before taking it to a garage.

cold starting is a known probelm on the 120 , solutions can be any of the following , glow plugs , new battery, valve clearance , cranks sensor , timing belt . its tough to know which to change mind ! i did the plugs on mine and it made no difference ! i sold the car in the end , got sick of being embarressed sat there cranking it

I get no spanner light but i do have a reader and if memory serves me correctly it did say something about the crank. but i was trying to get the garage to sort it that i bought the car from but they've been as much use as a chocolate fireguard! so i've given up with them. thanks for the advise
