    Engine : Z18XE,Z19DTH,Z20NET

    Year : 2006

Question where can i get an RPM signal?

I need to find where i can attach a wire to get an RPM signal.. I have a couple of bits of kit needing this now and each one states to get it from the negative of the coil.. however i see no way of connecting a wire to the negative of one of my coils.

    Does anybody have any ideas?

Not sure on the Vectra but it used to be a green wire on the dash connection.

according to the wiring diagram there are 2 green wires coming from the low speed CAN bus to the back of the instrument cluster, i guess its these... problem is that many places state that when they have spliced into this the instrument cluster tacho stops working, but when they desolder the wire and out it back to how it was its fine...

It seems that many of these gadgets that require and rpm pulse signal rarely get sorted as it so tricky to get a signal that does not create other issues..

what about using the crankshaft sensor, will this give me a reliable rpm signal?

    Alternator generating coil?

This will give you a reliable signal, but you have to interpret it... as you would with pulling a signal from a crank or cam sensor.

You may even find the alternator has a terminal for doing just this... it is how non-electronic diesels run their tachos.

To set up an aftermarket diesel tacho (like a marine one, for example), the tacho has a setting for the number of poles in the alternator and the ratio between crank and alternator pulley sizes. This gets you somewhere close to the real RPM. You can then fine tune the tacho using a pot on the back. All the unit is is a frequency meter... you are just calibrating it to read RPM.

So you see how using this sort of signal will give you a signal (frequency) that is proportional to the RPM, but it's how you interpret / use it...

I believe it is all canbus to the back of the clocks, not sure if there is a rpm signal anymore. I think you can get a CAN BUS interface that will give you that output. What are you trying to wire in, perhaps there is an alternative. You can get gauges that plug into the diagnoistic socket....
