Default 1st attempt to repair an Xbox 360

This all started today from this thread http://www.vectra-c.com/forum/showth...highlight=xbox

My neighbours have a dead Xbox and I fancy a challenge.

They told me firstly that it had died. After further questioning (sound like a copper don't I ) they have told me it started to fail reading disks on occasions then lock up mid game and now it just won't read any disks.

I collected it from them today and set about dismantling it tonight.

So far I have found it caked in dust. That was not a surprise. If it has a fan or two it will collect dust.

Cleaned it up, and then took the DVD drive casing apart.

I can't see any obvious signs of a fault so have cleaned this also.

Now putting it back together tonight to see how it performs.

I suspect it will fail still but its worth a try at least.

If it does fail then its on to fitting a new DVD drive.

If that fails then I will use the repair kit in the thread mentioned above.

If it still fails then oh well, put it down to experience. I think it worth a punt mind you.

I have taken over the kitchen table tonight, much to the annoyance of my missus but she is getting used to my repairing / modding since I joined this forum

    Fingers crossed

Well I still have to change all the LED's on my CD70 Navi to blue/white.

Maybe I should get that out and take it to bits also.

That would take up the rest of the space

EDIT : Right going downstairs to put it back together and see how it runs

Pah, you're just a mere amateur (at stripping computers AND taking up dining room tables)

This is how to clean a laptop (me taking Mark the cabby's to bits)

Was the drive filled with dust?

Since you have it apart remove the rear grills, This will increase airflow and decrease noise by 50%

Well put it back (semi) together and it won't read any disks which I know are fine.

Everything else with this Xbox seems fine. It powers up, I can sync one of my controllers with it. All the menus do what they should do, so I'm going to order a Lite On drive replacement in the near future.

Just to note that when a disk is inserted you don't hear that initial click/motor sound you normaly get when it starts to load a game. I can eject it and close it via the controller fine.

Have read few things about having to flash the drive or having to swap out the DVD board to the new item when putting in this new item. I beleive its all to do with what firmware version it has.

Going to read up on this a bit more before I buy the drive.

If anyone knows more I would appreciate the advice.

The DVD drive is the Lite On model

    Model No. DG-16d2s
    MS Part No. x800474-008
    PLDS Part No. 3b41216031

    Many thanks

Here is the drive you need, All you need to do is swap the logic boards over. The philips and lite on drive are the same.
