    Default Battery

    Hey Guys,

Quick question about a battery - sorry, but motorbike in particular!!

I charged my bike battery back in March and for the times i used the bike over the summer it would start the bike no problems - at least once or twice a week for short runs.

Left if for about 6 weeks, and it struggled to turn over... but bump started fine.

Battery is reading 12v with a meter as it is. Its currently on the charger, but ill check it again to ensure the bike is charging it too.

I am guessing that the battery is actually fine, but something is live on the bike when the ignition is off and causing the battery to drain... does that sound about right?

Nope, It sounds like the battery is just knackered, Happens quite regular on bikes. A good charge with an optimate or similar should sort it, if it doesnt then its a new battery. Voltage wise, I'm sure it should read 13.2v or thereabouts at rest, 14.6 with the revs up, and it should drop when trying to start the bike, But it shouldn't drop below 11v ish. The numbers may not be exact as it's been a while since i've had the pleasure of a bike

how old is the battery m8 ? might be time for a new one 1 as it may not be holding its charge anymore as they get weaker over the years im lead to believe the life expectancy of a battery is 3-4 yrs worth getting a battery load test done imho

    Thanks mate,

I have it on charge now, so ill check the volts when its done, then check when its on the bike at idle and revving.

Just looking over the bike, it would appear the previous owner has put a fan on the rectifier which looks as if its a straight connection to the battery and not through the ignition circuit... I'll check when the battery is back on. I am guessing that its so quiet that i never noticed it before.

Would that be enough to drain the battery over 6 weeks or so?

only if running on a live feed and running permanently put your meter over the battery when crancking engine to start and see what the current drops to and once started check for charging voltage 13.8v to 14.5 for a healthy charging system for a car not to sure about bikes though

If it's running permanent then yeah it could. If it has been set up with a heat switch it should only come on when its warm. Failing that, Pop a relay in with it. 1 feed direct from the battery, a switched feed from an ignition live and an earth. Not too hard to connect up

Looks like it is the battery itself at fault. The fan is off the ignition so its not that, and the battery is probably at least 4 if not 5 years old.

I think i'll charge up the one i have at the moment, use it to periodically start the bike over winter, then get a new one for next season.

Cheers for the pointers chaps, always appreciated.

No probs. Given the really cold winters we've been having I was changing mine yearly. I had to keep my bikes outside tho, If you have an access to a garage get an optimate if you dont have one (not just a normal charger) and leave it plugged in constantly. Should do the trick
P.s there's a motorbike forum too TMBF thats really good
