    Default Winter Tyres

Thinking bout winter tyres especially since last winter was a bit of a disaster and this winter my fiancé is gonna be driving for the first time (she has her test soon) Just wondering if anybody knows when the best time to have them fitted is? also any recommendations of a good winter tyre?

End of this month and for the next 6 months if you beleive Auto Express.

Though they do say a hard winter is coming and these winter tyres work best below 7c.

Hurry up as when it comes they will be flying off the shelves.

As luck has it my front tyres are usually down to 2mm at this time of year
I usually wait until the roads are heavy with leaves, which results in blocked drains, standing water, and floods

If I still have 4mm of tread on the front tyres I then wait until the first snow and then buy two new tyres and place the removed tyres into storage
These new tyres are usually enough for me for the next four months, when worn down to 4mm the snow has usually ceased, and once worn the previously stored tyres can be refitted and worn out as well

On the Vectra C there is no point fitting winter specification tyres, the low profile is too severe as I found last year
What you really need are narrower wheels, which can then cut through the snow, not sit on top of it
The height of the snow was just too much and the front of the car could not clear the snow
I doubt there will be the same issue this year, but if there is I do the same again and simply cancel all work until the roads are safe again

I'm not taking the VXR out in the snow this year, but I have got Winter Tyres for the Fiat 500.

I normally run 16" low profile tyres, but have bought a set of 14" steel wheels with Goodyear Ultragrip 7+ tyres.

I'll put them on as soon as the weather temperatures drop below 5 degrees regularly. So anticipating November / December time through to March

Sorry if this is total dumbness but the tyre size I have on the now are 215/50/17. I was wondering if I could put different tyre size on as long as I kept the same diameter for example 225/45/17???

winter tyres at 215/50/17 seam quite hard to come by and a good bit more expensive than 225/45/17

I am driving on 235-40/18 Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3.

I disagree in the fact the narrower tyres should be bette in the winter.. Sure if you have a little car like the Fiat 500 or similar...

With narrower tires on a heavy car you slice through the snow to have traction on the icy tarmark. Result NO friction at all. The goal for heavyŽer cars is to stay in the snow because friction is higher in snow than on pure ice.
Last year I drove my 04 V6CDTi on 225-50/17 ContiŽs TS830 P on spec. "Elegance" alloy wheels and not once did the car do something it shouldnŽt do. It drove like on rails. I drive 50 miles back and forth to work.

The pattern is also not the same i small sizes as in the bigger sizes. Because manufactures have calculated what pattern to use with bigger and wider tires.

Because I am from Denmark we have harsch winters and a lot of rain to.

I would not for one second use summer tires in the winter. They canŽt cope with the snow at packs the pattern on the summertire, so you might as well drive on fully worn tires instead. Same effect.
Here in Denmark the cars are more expensive and insurence rates therefore are higher. Tires is expensive also but is adds up when you see it in the long run.
I would say the 85% of all cars in Denmark use wintertires.. the last 15% dosenŽt need to take the car if there is snow.

I used winter tyres on my 2.8 last year and was shocked at how good they were. I would honestly recomend them to everyone

I Agree with the last 2 comments.

I fitted 215/55/16 Continental TS830 to my 2003 2.0Dti this time last year and just left them on.

No problems at all, great tyre in the snow, but they were £460 fitted for all four at Kwik-Fit. And no they didnt try to up-sell anything else to me, nor tell me my car was falling apart.

The front two will be replaced this time next year, after about 20,000 miles.

It did cost £60 per wheel more but in the overall cost of the car it's not a lot. Especially if you love your family and dont love sliding about in the snow.

But bear in mind that not all tyres in all sizes are available in this country, which is why I choose Continental's.

i had winter tyres fitted to my megane coupe last year but they can be used all year round apparently.

i did notice a difference in the snow and ice but it was due new tyres anyway.

i would defo consider it again tho, its law in a lot of european countries.
