    Default Credit scoring

How many of you guys actually check it?

The gf and I checked ours and were amazed. A loan that was completed FOUR years ago still showed that the last payment was outstanding on mine and the gf score was lower than what she thought because she has an overdraft that she does not use! Her score would be higher if she used it!

Funny that companies use this to gauge how trustworthy you are yet companies do not keep them up to date. I have spent the last two hours trying to sort it and have to write a letter asking them to show a settled amount for my loan that ended four years ago. Bl00dy madness!

Well worth checking if you are planning on getting a mortgage in the future before you apply

Wendy can't get a contract phone as we're told we have lodgers who have debts. Wish I'd known the dogs and cats had credit cards!
Service provider say they can't tell us any more, last tenant died in the property, asked local police how I do a credit check on the house rather than us, they said it's not possible for debts other than ours to be recorded, prior/other tenants won't show as house records. Funny when we lived at old house, we spent 3 years turning debt collectors away whom had old tenant details....I give up with credit checks.

I have CreditExpert so get alerts and can check my report anytime

Grumpy have you tried getting a copy of your credit report from Experian? Think you can get it one-off for £2, this'll show other info as well like any Fraud recorded etc. How long have you lived where you are?

You need to write to them and explain the situation and demand that they remove it from your credit report and you are well within your rights to ask for compensation.

you can't remove them. My brother has the same first initial as me and all his debts are on my file from when we lived with parents. Even though he wrote and advise we were not financially connected, they only put a note on my file and would not remove them. I even have other peoples finances on my file who have the same surname as me and not related!! Stupid beyond belief.

YOU can't remove them however you can make the company responsible for recording it remove it IF it has been placed there in error. They are LEGALLY OBLIGED to make sure the information is accurate.

First step, write to them and ask them to remove it because its incorrect (include a copy of their other letter if you still have it). If they refuse, take it to the relevant ombudsman and then failing that you can take them to court and if it turns out the default was placed incorrectly you may have a case for damaged. You could also send a copy of the letter from them saying they will remove it to the credit reference agency it is recorded with and ask them to remove it on the basis the company who recorded it have already stated it should be removed.

Vodafone defaulted me a few years back for about £17 that was applied to an account after I terminated it. I had since moved house so didn't know about it. As soon as I became aware of it, I paid it. One nicely worded letter to them later, default gone. I was also able to get HBOS to remove a default because they hadn't followed the correct procedure for filing it and didn't have the paperwork to back it up.
