I know I have posted up a few things recently, but need some pointers. What could cause hunting at idle? Whatever is my prob at moment is linked to iratic idle revs

There are many reasons why this could be happening
I would start with these two :
    A
    Disconnect the throttle and compare

    B
Check the exhaust condition (possible blow back)

It is also possible the injectors have become contaminated, especially if you notice the revs on power are erratic as well

But it's intermitant , it always follows me flooring it, car going into limp mode and then poor idle. As soon as I turn ignition off then on again it's fine, and no codes

That is the engine going into safe mode
Do not turn the engine off and have the fault code read

Mine does it once a month and dealership scratched head, "er, the warning lights were on when we started but there is no fault code stored, when we restarted the engine all was fine"

Usually starts with an increasing amount of black smoke on flooring it with a cold engine, then as the days pass all the time, then finally fault code and safe mode
Switch the engine off, wait 5 minutes, then all is normal
It has only been doing this since the SCV was replaced and I suspect it is a program to discharge dirt from the fuel pump

sounds like crank shaft speed sensor to me.

does it happen after holding a cruising speed of 80 mph ? anr / or only once the engine is upto operating temp.

Very unlikely as when this fails it normally remains failed (similar to front brake pad sensor)
More likely would be the camshaft sensor as this can throw up safe mode a few times before finally failing, also often makes the EMS light flash or flicker as it nears failure

Will keep that one in mind

The camshaft and crankshaft sensors are all very similar on the VX engines
I've not known one to be over £150 yet, including fitting
Obviously the camshaft sensor is easiest, so I might get a quote next time
