    Default Clutch problem!

    OK here we go again

I was coming back from a weekend away with the caravan on the back. I was experiencing no problems while doing 50/55mph along the M5 heading north. Just after J4a (I think) the clutch felt as if it was slipping as I maintained my speed up the incline and before I could even think about it I lost all connection between the engine and the wheels. I could select any gear but had no drive. So I pulled over.

There was a very slight burning smell
    No management lights
    No overheating
The clutch as done about 20k since being replaced.

When the engine was off or when it was running I could select all gears. When the RAC came and we uncoupled the van there was a little pull but only very slight. I got carried and towed home.

It was too dark to look, so I will tomorrow, Anyone any ideas including the obvious and what should I look for?

It didnít feel like the clutch had gone because I had no warning of it slipping or finding gears?

    1.8, 52, club saloon.

Bit of background just in case Ė about 2 months ago it had to have a topend rebuild because the water pump failed. I cannot see that this as anything to do with it but you never know.

    Worst case, DMF failure
    Best case, transmission fluid leak
Sadly needs examination, rather than guess work

Right I have had a look!

    My finding so far:

I can select all gears with or without the engine running
There is no pressure at the clutch pedal (only spring resistance)
There is no pressure at the brake pedal (although it will pump slightly)
Fluid level is about half inch above fill level (cannot say if it was at this level before)

My knowledge is dated and previously (none complicated cars) I would be looking at sevo and master cylinder (i.e. servo failure and seal failure in the master cylinder). I know things are slightly different now but the principle must be the same?

I have not ruled out clutch failure i.e. broken bit, because there was no warning but there was no sudden noise or rattle. And with a split pipe I would be able to pump the clutch and it then release with loss of fluid.

How do I check to make sure these things are ok?

PS. I donít think I have a DMF!

When you lose the clutch in the Vectra C you can still engage gears, there is just no drive
First sign is a burning smell, then loss of drive
Mine went within about 30 miles, started slipping and then failed completely
However, mine was traced to the DMF, taking the clutch with it

The clutch is about 20k old. When I had the original clutch replaced (about 50k) I had started to get slipping and some difficulty changing gears. and the pedal was high (with pressure), I have had none of this!

Golden rule on the Vectra C
Clutch fails, replace the DMF as well
DMF fails, replace the clutch as well

There are horror stories where only one is replaced, the other or replacement doesn't last long if not replaced at the same time

From what I have read on here and by looking at Haynes, I do not have a DMF only a standered flywheel. Preface 1.8's are not fitted with them - unless mine is different? (which would not come as a shock)

I have just been looking for the obvious problems untill some one tells me how to make sure the hydrolic system is working correctly.

The gearchange mechanisum feels very loose i.e. I can change gear by moving the linkage under the bonnet with my hand, this also moves the stick inside!

Can some one tell me how to check the hydrolic system without spending money please
