    Default advice on tyre wear

    right here goes

went to a wedding yesterday and as i drove away from the photos being taken i had a blow out in the car on the off side

managed to change the wheel to the space saver ( not easy in a morning suit trying not to get it dirty )

removed the wheel and had a look at it and was extremely shocked at what i saw

the damage goes all teh way round the whole inside of the tyre

i also checked the near side and it was almost identical

so i had 2 new tyres fitted this morning and had the tracking checked as that was i thought had caused it ( too much toe out )
but they said the tracking was spot on

    any ideas gents ?????

Isnt this a common problem on the Vec C?....something to do with some suspension bush etc?

Is the car modified in anyway with the suspension etc? and were they fronts? also a simple tracking check isn't sufficient to see this kind of issue you need a 4 wheel alignment which will check such things as front and rear camber as well

paul , the suspension is all standard , just been looking into hunters 4 wheel alignment so will get it all checked

just mystified that it happened on both front tyres at the same time

oh yeah and as i was changing the wheel and lowering it back onto the floor the damn crappy vauxhall jack split in 2 !!!

My rear camber was out and the rear toe in which made the inside edges of the nearside front wear prematurely, just shows a 4 wheel alignment found it. Its not something they do from new so the fault can just sit there until you discover it lots of other folks with similar set up issues.

What make are the tyres? All I can make out is DSST and run flat.

My v6 tyre had cracked all they way round when I was checking them and probably wasn't far off from ending up like yours

Just an idea but have you removed the under tray? Just thinkingnthe inner edges off my front gyres get really warm from the engine maybe the heat has worn rubber prematurely?

That damage looks more like permanent underinflation, possibly from a puncture
The tyres may look inflated but unless you physically check the pressures the tyre may in fact be underinflated
This is a common problem when RFT tyres are fitted to cars without pressure monitoring equipment
If the tyre remains underinflated then it will eventually fail catastrophically, typically within 150 miles

However, very unlikely if both front tyres suffered the same issue on both inside edges

Nextly what tyre pressures were you using? (On the 3.0 V6 CDTI and equivalent it is quite critical)
I've had my front tyres down to 28PSI and can feel they are underinflated
Below 22PSI they begin to overheat
Finally, what size and specification are they?

    hi m8internet

the tyres were dunlop sp 01 size was 225 45 17

now i need to check what the proper size for the tyres should be

the handbook says they should be
    215/50/r17
    or
    225/45/r17

the new tyres fitted yesterday were
    215/45/17 87w

im not sure these are correct
also i was running the older ones at 34psi but checked autodata yesterday at the tyre place and they should be 39 psi

can anyone shed some light on whether the new tyres are ok or do i need to take them back and change them for different ones
