I've known about this device for two years now (discussed at meeting), but as yet nothing or any progress at the Home Office
There was a suggestion it could be an ACPO approved device, but as it would have to be installed and fitted within the carriageway it would have to be Home Office Type Approved

Keep your eyes out for Avon & Somerset testing this

Equally, it could not be used in Scotland (as three physical tyre measurements around the circumference of the tyre are required for consideration of prosecution)
However, it could be used in the same way as the roadside breath test device, to provide an indication and suggestion that a tyre may be below the minimum tread depth

Finally, the device does not discriminate between vehicle types

You'd only get an inch or so of the tyre circumference, if they bring them in people will be swerving across the road to avoid anything that looks like one.
AFAIK, most on here never let their tyres get anywhere near that low.
    Interesting technology though.

That would be a big waste of govenment money! As stated above people with bald tyres will just swerve them and cause more accidents! I think speed cameras can cause accidents, as people just stare at their speedo as driving through them, and not look at the road, so while people are staring at speedo what if a child runs in road?? I personally never speed or have bald tyres and if more people was like this, the government money could go on better things, but i know we dont live in a perfect world.

They need to focus more on uninsured and unlicensed people more.......The percentage of them is higher than illegal tyres and cost US and the goverment more money etc.

As Grumpy said they will just swerve and tbh they prob got no insurance or even a license anyway haha.....

To be honest I find we already have one of the best bald tyre detectors possible its called snow, It works like this.

Those that know and care about tyres always have well above legal limit and some even have winter tyres, Those that dont bother or care end up taking out the local council scenery / natyral scenery at the first hint of ice / snow with surprising success.
