Default why does it not start

working all day on a mates vec 'c' year 2004, 1.9cdti (120). the first start of the day is nigh on impossible but after the first start it behaves fine all day.

gave it a full service including fuel filter, new glow plugs(wow, they are a ***** to do), yet it still churns over for 2-3 mins befor finally firing up.
anyone else had this issue and resolved it?

no fault codes present on my op com either

Could be a few things. Leak of pipes maybe?

Are the glow plugs all working?
    Maybe temp sensor?

    Vehicle : Mokka

    Trim : SE - Orange Rock 's !!

    Engine : 1.7CDTi

    Year : 2014

Doing a brief search, found a few ideas.
This might be a fuel problem where the fuel drains back into the tank or
maybe the Leak off pipes leaking or
the battery is not good, so the engine is not turning over fast enough to start.

    Anyway have a look here:

funnily enough it does sounds as though it is lazy when turning over, but gets faster as you keep turning the key, almost as if the battery is building power. also the glowplug light on the dash only shows for 1 second on the cold start then does not come back on until the next day, is this right

You could try to disconnect the thermostat temp wire, this will keep glow plug light on & give a fast tickover, you may also get the fans on but not to worry when the wire is put back on when running everything will go back to normal, another try is to park on a decent hill nose down if things improve the leak off pipes could be changed & there may also be a bleed back to the tank, try starting after a couple of trys with the ignition on allowing the tank pump to run & stop the try to start.

The CDTi's have an electric fuel lift pump in the tank. This primes before the engine starts and gets fuel right up to the injection pump straight away.

For the same reason, leak off pipes are not such an issue on the CDTi engines. On the older DTi's perished leak-off pipes allowed fuel to drain back to the tank.

Personally, I would get the compression values checked on each cylinder with the engine cold.
