Default It makes depressing reading when.....

Out of interest for the last week I've used to on board computer to show 'the stats' for my weekly journey to work. Its not nice reading lol. I know it's not the most accurate but anyway...

I do between 5-7 miles each way a day 5 days a week, mostly through town with stop start at both ends usually and up to about 40 if I'm lucky going one route, or a 2 mile 60 mph blat the other way, but is 3 miles further..

The average speed for the week was 19 mph, the average mpg was mid twenties. At this rate I may as well buy a push bike

I do 52 miles a day, mainly A-road and dual carriageway. I'm getting an average speed of 48mph, and an average mpg of 43mpg. That figure is wrong though - as I'm running on LPG, so it's actually more like 37mpg. I did run on petrol for a few days though once, and managed to get it up to 51.5mpg average.

The trick (at least on a 1.8) to really good economy is to change up at 2000rpm, drop back gently when cars ahead start braking so you don't usually need to brake (unless they're stopping for lights etc), and accelerate gently too (not too difficult if you're limiting yourself to 2000rpm!). Also let the car slow down from 60mph to 50mph when going up hills and do no more than 68mph on dual carriageways in the left hand lane (overtaking lorries as necessary).

It makes for dull driving - but then, on a daily commute I'm not in any hurry to get to work!

    True Mick.

But I was thinking because of the small mileage I do (about 3-4k a year)
    A) its not good for an oil burner and
    B) its not so much of an issue as I still only put £40 in it every 2.5 - 3.5 weeks

As a second car, I do also try to use it at weekends when I can, except for family outings etc, when the children may get it dirty, lol.......

My route to work is a similar distance and type, and I always use a push bike for it

Am seriously thinking about it. But then there's be no need to keep the vec then. It would be hard to jusitify it, that's the trouble

Take no notice of what said about diesels being no good for short journeys. I've run them for 5 years now and mostly short runs like yourself. No problems so long as they do get a good blast now and then, and of course proper servicing.
Also you would get, at your rate of use around 7 weeks worth of motoring for your £40
But if that's all your spending at the moment then no worries anyway
