At present I can only afford an older VXR without finance anyway, so the bonus of me waiting would be that I could buy a 09 one with better suspension and probably more gadgets.

lol.... It's real enough for me, and it took a very real amount of cash out of my bank account, Since the sports release Range Rover has become a Brand and not just a Model, Both the Range Rover Sport and the big fugly vogue have Range Rover logos on parts/windows etc, whereas the Discovery, Freelander and Evoque have Land Rover logos on parts/windows etc, So it is a real RR, It only used a shortend version of the chasis, so apart from the chasis it's nothing like the Discovery, the dash, interior and all bodyparts are different, some models share the same Jag diesel lump.

Your mates RRS must be the old 2.7 or 3.6 model, he should look at getting it mapped for more fun/mpg, in the 2011MY 3.0TD6, 24v twin turbo I'm getting 26mpg around town, and the cars only done 3700 miles to date, so i expect it will get better, its been tuned to around 290/295'ish bhp and it pulls like train..
