I think you'll actually be looking for the max towing weight. The gross train weight will be more relevant to your licence type. I.E. If you passed your test after june 1997 you'll only be allowed a max train weight of 3.5t. So 2000kg car + 1500kg caravan/ trailer would be your limit. Hope this helps

If you've passed after 1st JANUARY 1997, then you can only tow up to 750kg, you need B + E to tow over that

Sorry, Jan. My bad. Are caravan's not fitted with a brake though? I thought the weight of the towed trailer was increased if it was fitted with a brake but was not to exceed the unladen weight of the towing vehicle?

Nope, regardless of if it's braked or not its still 750kg max, you need the E cat to tow it. There's so many regulations, the only thing that changes for trailers over 750kg is that it must have a brakeaway cable connected to a operating braking system, under 750kg doesn't need that. I have a feeling that the max train weight will be 3350kg or thereabouts, so you won't be able to tow over 1300kg, Really need to check your plate tho

I bought my 1.9 cdti to tow my caravan and all the tow weights were in the manual. If you have the relevant license to tow (ie old git like me), then you will find the maximum weight of a braked trailer that the car can cope with in the owners manual. In the case of a facelift 1.9 Sri that is 1600 kg.
Just to complicate matters though you cannot tow anything in this country that is heavier than the kerb weight of your car which in my case is approx 1570kgs ( once again details in the owners manual).
Hope this helps, if you are still unsure go to www.towsure.co.uk and on the front page you can find an outfit matcher. This allows you to add details of your car and caravan and see whether they would he a good match.

    WRONG!!

    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring...es/DG_10013073

As long as you're under 3.5 ton you can tow with cat B licence, and that trailer is lighter than car.

    I.e. 2 ton vectra pulling 1400kg caravan = LEGAL
