    Question Swapping Private registration?

Ok, going to be scrapping the wifes Punto at the start of the month. Its on a Private Registration that we will be putting on her new car. So how does it all work? If the old owner of her new car sends off the V5, as they are supposed to, deos that mean I'll need to wait until I get the V5 back from the DVLA before I can transfer the private plate to her new car? But if im scrapping her old car does that mean i'll have to put her number on retention first then transfer it once the V5 comes back?

You can do the transfer by filling in the V5 of the new car in her name and handing everything in for transfer, that will then swap the new car into her name.
Bear in mind you will also require the following documents for a transfer:
    -Both V5 documents
-MOT for both cars (if applicable)
    -A V317
-An insurance cover note for the new car with the private registration on it.

It will take currently around 10 working days for the paperwork to be completed, however DVLA no longer allow you to pick the completed paperwork up from the local office, so the replacement tax discs etc. will be posted out to you.

Thanks Dave, Kinda hoped you'd see this post as I take it you deal with the likes of this on a daily basis. So basically I need to hold on to the V5 for the new car and not let the old owner send it off?

The previous owner still needs to send in the V5 to confirm the change of registered keeper
    You then complete a V62
Personally, photocopy everything then send it recorded delivery

My company gets round this by taking the vehicles out of use for four weeks, until the change of registered keeper comes through
Obviously you can avoid this by waiting for the replacement V5 first

Remember- when you scrap the car they will take the V5. Make sure you get a certificate of distruction. They should have access to FADS, they can print it off there and then.

Yeah, unfortunately I do this fairly regularly (sat filling one out as we speak) keep a hold of it & get them to sign the V5 under the registered keeper bit, then fill in your wifes details and she signs the new keeper bit.

Eh, no they dont, all the previous keeper needs to do is sign the registered keeper section, change of ownership can be done at the same time as the transfer, there's no need to send of the V5 and wait for it to come back in the new keepers name before transferring the plate. Once the plate is transferred a logbook for the new car will be issued to the new keeper.

To transfer a reg plate you need a v5 and a Mot on both vehicles. There is no way round it.

Its £80 for the transfer or £105 for a retention.

    MOT is age dependant
