Default Can I move EGR manually?

I wanted to clean my EGR today, I removed, but was unable to remove the left side cooling pipe, almost like rubber has fuzed with metal.

But I was able to remove enough to see the valve itself, it was a little cokey in there, but as I don't have a point of reference I don't know how coked.

But my question is, should I be able to move the valve with my hand, and what is closed and open? like the clean pictures I can see on a google image search, I assume if the end of it is sealed, then that is closed, which mine is, but what way does it open? inside or outside? There is no evidence on mine that it has moved either way recently.

My boost sensor is now clean as a whistle, I don't appear to have any vacuum pipe leaks, I have a new air filter, the actuator rod for the turbo moves freely by hand ( so I assume is ok, but have run a can of 10k boost through it), the only thing left is the EGR, which I am hoping is the reason for my car feeling like a non turbo diesel turbo from the 80s.

Oh, and here's the confusing part, no smoke, not a jot, nada, no puffs on start up, none under load, or high revs, so I am assuming other engine internals are running efficiently.

Just attach a 12V source to it mate - your battery will do. It should activate the solenoid and you'll hear a click if it's working. How far it moves will tell you if it's still working or not...

i could only move mine a fraction by hand, it was quite stiff and fiddly due to the fact it pushes outwards, i assumed any movement was good!

Great thanks, I assumed it opened outwards, but was unable to budge either way and the soot does not have any clean spots, or tracks, so I can't tell if it moves.

A guy next to work is quite cheap, so I might commandeer his time this week and get him to clean it for me, atleast then I can rule out the EGR for my problem, whether it is faulty or not.
