I fitted a k&n panel filter to my 1.8, and it got rid of my flat spot at low revs, smoothed out the idle, and it also drives and pulls better on the motorway...

I believe the 'performance' panel filters tend to be less prone to becoming clogged than paper element filters, thus permitting a better, more consistent airflow. They also don't need replacing once a year so you might argue the cost of the 'performance' filter over it's lifetime may well be lower than several paper element filters over the same period.

I swapped from a K&N to a Pipercross just to see if it was any better and I think it is as there seems to be that little bit more go now BUT the Pipercross does not fit as well as the K&N as the side walls are very floppy and care needs to be taken when refitting the airbox lid otherwise the filter falls into the bottom of the airbox, its like a jelly frame with a foam middle and it is genuine as it came from Demon Tweeks so its your choice but K&N is the better Filter for fit so I would trust this for long term use and is still better than a standard filter

Both the K&N and Pipercross were replacement Panel Filters and not cone type
