Default VXRD Vs. Mondeo Confusion ??

OK, this isnt scientific but has caused some confusion with one of my mates....

He had a tuning box on his car recently and we went for a blast down the motorway.... both cars appeared to be 'about the same' for on the move acceleration.. He was delighted with the results and went home happy...

Oh, and at the time, I had a CR1 Tuning Box fitted to my car....

Tonight, we went through some facts and figures which shocked both of us...

Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCI 6 Speed Manual Hatch Zetec = 1516kg Kerb Weight

Vauxhall Vectra 1.9 CDTI 6 Speed Manual Hatch SRi = 1456kg Kerb Weight

Ford Mondeo CR2 Tuning Box stats = 165 bhp & 380 NM Torque
Vauxhall VXRPC Remap stats = 195 bhp & 447 NM Torque

.............so my car is lighter and more powerful, but his car was able to easily keep up ???????

(Admitedly I didnt have the remap on the car at that point, but I did have the tuning box so figures wouldnt have been much different)

Whats that all about then ????

    gearing IMO...

It's all very well making the power, but if the gearing won't let you accelerate at the same rate, then you're never going to get away..

The mondeo may have a 'closer/lower' geared box that will let it get the edge on acceleration..

the only way to tell is to put each car in the gear where they both have a 1:1 ratio and then see how they pull against each other..

    Mondy TDCi's are pretty quick.

My best mate just bought a 55 plate 2.2 TDCi ST Mondy.

I've been in it and its a ****** fast bit of kit!!!.

I dunno how the facts and figures relate etc, seems a bit strange.

The mpg that the 2.2 TDCi engine can attain are pretty impressive as well!!!.

Mind you, I would never buy one, 3.0V6CDTi all the way!!!!.

You'd really need to get both on a rolling road and have a look at the graphs mate. His gearing could be shorter than yours. His torque curve could be flatter, any number of things. Its all well and good having a really high torque or bhp figure but if its only able to hold that figure for 200 revs, a car with much lower figs could be just as quick or even faster.

According to this 0-60 is 10.1s for the Mondeo.
You should pi55 all over that......I know you said it's got a box on it, but yours standard is 8.9s......so shouldn't be a problem....

if you want more poer did you know you can lpg a diesel
it will give you about 30% more
this will make the diesel burn better
diesel runs 50/50 with the lpg
the cost of my old tdi vectra would have been £1700

Looking here, its looks like on paper that the 2.2 Mondeo has virtually identical performance figures and stats to the 1.9 150

I hate to say it but the Ford/Citroen TDCi engines are very impressive indeed. I've never seen a TDCi 130 go head to head with a CDTi 150 but I've driven both and I wouldn't put much between them. I'd definitely say that the Ford engine seems to develop peak power earlier and hold it for longer.
