Had a problem with the a3 , the window would rise a few inches then drop down.
I stripped the door down , and replaced the offending broken cable guides .
    This is how it went

ah not too bad once youve done a couple lol - common fault used to go all the time - did you get a price for a new mech - not cheap!!!! its actually quite a good idea as the whole frame and glass comes out as one after removing a few bolts

It worries me to think of the cost of a new mechanism + a few hours labour at audi rates , there is not gonna be much change from £250-£300 I reckon .
Cost me a grand total of £6.22 for 2 clips / retainers and 2 hours of my time fitting them .

That brings back memories .... the Golf mk4 has the same issues & VW sell an upgrade kit where the clips are alloy .. £25ish if i remember including cables .

I had both mine go & autoglass came and did the upgrade for £30 !

    Total investment £55 !

But there is a long standing thing with VAG that they don't see it as a "recall" even though the replacement is now alloy !!!!

    cheers

Tbh - I have actually repaired a golf mkiv a while back , the glass had frozen in the frame , guy sent window down , the mechanism snapped and dropped in the door , and the glass fell in the door when it thawed out lol.
The kit is about £30 from vw iirc - the panel comes off easy enough , then there is an inner membrane ( steel skin ) held on by a load of 10mm bolts , then the reg comes away from the door in one , that's a bit of a bad job aswell , autoglass must be bananas to do it for that price.

My Mk4 Golf went also, bought the kit with alloy clips off ebay, and found a good guide on the internet that showed very clearly how to change them over.
