Default VXR steering wheel with Half Can controls

    Hi All,

Random question for you all… I want to change my 4 spoke LS wheel for a three spoke VXR wheel. To make things more confusing I have a pre-facelift half canbus model.

So far I have worked out that the physical wheels will swap easily enough. I will prob get an Astra one as these seem much more available than the Vectra VXR ones. I know I will need to get a three spoke airbag from a Vectra C with twin connections to match mine.

My questions comes round the steering wheel controls. I know the full can scroll wheel ones will not work with the halfcan set up I have. So I am faced with three options… One, fit the wheel and accept the steering wheel controls will not work or even light up. Two, try and upgrade the car to full can (far too hard a job to try for me) or Three, try and retro fit three spoke half can button controls to the three spoke VXR wheel.

Having taken the steering wheel off loads already on different Astra’s and Vectra I know the half can has a slightly different mounting plate and control harness to the half can set up.

So my questions to you all are…

    · Has anyone tried this and have it worked before?
    · Could I swap a half can steering wheel innards (air bag mounting plate and controls and mounting bracket) to the VXR wheel?
    · Leaving the mounting bracket for the airbag alone can the wiring loom from the halfcan controls be fitted in around this?

Any other thoughts or Ideas on this would be much appreciated…!
    Coldo

if you use full canbus controls they will not work but will illuminate , the rhs ones will operate the horn. The lhs will work to a fashion. You will need to check to see if your CIM has the 2 plugs or just one.
I done this mod a couple of time and it gets quite expensive.

    Ahhhh…

I wonder if swapping the full inside of the wheel is a better option. I know the airbag module mounting points are the same on all the wheels. What I don’t know is if the screws which hold the mounting bracket to the wheel for the horn etc are in the same place…

I can see me taking the wifes Astra VXR apart this weekend to experiment… !

Yeah... until it all goes wrong...

prpblem is I do not have a three spoke vectra wheel to practice on... I have two spare 4 spoke ls wheels which I might have a look at...

If the screws are it he same place then I don't see why this would not work. Himmmmm.....
