Default SRI Auto - Whos knows best?

    Heres my Question:

    Who knows best for MPG?

    1: Auto box
    2: Driver

Reason i ask is ive read on here that the SRI 150 holds the gears longer and every time i think the box should move up a gear or two she seems happy to move about in just 3rd or 4th.

So i would rather pop her into 5th or 6th to keep revs lower and have to shift into manual mode.

So whats your thoughts - Does the gearbox know best as i cant get more than 450miles from a full tank.

The speed the autobox xhanges partially depends on how heavy your right foot is, gentle pressure on the loud pedal, it'll change later than if you press harder. I get around 50mpg, what sort of driving are you doing? Maainly start/stop or mianly 15 miles plus? A diesel it does need to get to full operating temperature, for several reasons.

    Hi Grumpy,

Im doing about 400-500 per week, mixed from a few town driving days then a couple long run days, very mixed but not a heavy right foot.

I have got a thermostat issue im waiting to get fixed under warrenty but i still think 450 miles per tank is very poor.

Plus every time i do hit the loud pedal i cover everyone in black fairy dust.

I drove my mate V6 CDTI sri auto and you are right it hold then gears . But I think thy all do. Going down hill in town I could no get it to go any higher than 4th. These new auto boxer are made to hang back when throttling off like a manual box as old auto just used to run away from you. I even took it to an auto gearbox specialist and he told me its was normal VX auto.

Mine rarely changes higher than 3rd around town (won't change to 4th till 41mph) and I do find it annoying so I use the manual change quite often. I don't believe the SRi box or software is any different to other models.

Mine usually stays in 3rd around town, I used to use the tiptronic to put it into 4th but can't be arsed anymore, the difference in mpg didn't vary much anyway. The car is doing 47.8 mpg according to the screen, which has risen since it was remapped, but it's probably more like 40ish but I'm happy with that from a car with plenty of oomph when needed.
